Women's basketball team building on success
Coming off last season in which the lady Falcon's basketball finished third in the provincial championships, the team is again looking to dominate the rankings this season.
The team has a strong mix of veterans and rookies with one goal in mind, to make it to the nationals and to bring home the gold.
The team is looking strong; finishing the exhibition schedule on a high note by defeating the Seneca Sting.
A key factor to their success this season will be a solid end-to-end defensive system. Using communication on and off the court will be an effective tool for success and help keep the girls focused on their goals. The players are also strong believers in keeping the energy level high on both the court and the bench. This high energy is attributed to their motivation and drive. By making good offensive plays, passing the ball and not taking unnecessary fouls, the girls' team can excel in their division.
“The girls need to go out each game and compete to the best of their [abilities],” said head coach Matt White.
White would like the team to finish this season on top of the West Division to secure the best seed possible for the playoffs. White feels confident that this year will bring success and he is focused on the girls playing solid defense and rebounding. White also believes that “last season was a measuring stick for this year.” He is hopeful that the success of last year will transfer over to this season.
The women's team went into their last exhibition game against the Sting with final preparation in mind. The Falcons started strong and seemed well-focused by taking advantage of Seneca's sloppy plays and handling. They kept their defense tight and were communicating well on the floor. Making key shots, the Falcons took an early lead and Seneca easily showed their frustration. The Falcons went into half time with an 18-point lead and came back into the second half riding their first half momentum. The Falcons showed good movement of the ball, and looked great at both ends of the court. The final score read Fanshawe 66 to Seneca's 36.
If early indications prove true, the lady Falcons should definitely be worth checking out this season!
