Women's soccer team wins OCAA gold

The lady Falcons beat Durham 1-0 to win the OCAA championship and is looking for more success on the field during the upcoming national championships.

With 17 other women's teams in their division, the Falcons were seen as the underdog going into the tournament and were not expected to win. But the team's improved immensely since the start of the season and they changed people's minds.

Director of athletics, Mike Lindsay said he had seen a young and inexperienced team at the beginning of the year but the “amount of improvement” the women had put into their playing was one of the “best stories” he's seen.

The championship game was clinched from the beginning, with second year player Alana Cornet scoring the Falcons' lone goal. The Falcons defense put up a strong front to keep Durham from equalizing.

Other notable Falcons were Erin Hemming, an OCAA league all-star and also named the championship's most valuable player, goalie Emily Gillet who received honours for being the top goalkeeper and Victoria Morelly for top regional scoring.

Danna Stringle, a Falcons forward, said their win was a mix of good team effort coupled with a lot of communication.

“It feels awesome…we all played solid, defensively everyone played awesome,” she said.

Even with nationals just a week away, Stringle is confident in the rest of the team.

“Everyone's ready, so bring it on,” she added.

Head coach Martin Painter echoed Stringle's assurance that the team will be ready for nationals taking place November 4 to 7.

“We want to stay humble, we want to stay hungry. We're confident to know we can beat anyone,” he said. “The sky's the limit right now.”
