Not much of a Lasting Distraction

Elias: Lasting Distraction

If The Fray and Muse had a baby, it would be a miracle of biology and physics, and it would be named Elias.

This Vancouver-based threesome released their premiere album, Lasting Distraction, on October 13. With a bright sound reminiscent of rock from the UK, the songs are a catchy combination of upbeat and thoughtful.

Conventional themes of love bring the comfort of familiarity and yet stave off the stagnance of routine. In fact, everything about this album preserves a delicate balance between the common and the innovative, forcing the listener towards a single thought:

So what?

There is no doubt that the album is good. Everything from production to presentation, from inspiration to instrumentation is aesthetically satisfying. It would be difficult not to like this album. It might, however, be difficult to love it.

Their first single, All We Want, is a new iteration of a song that the band has counted in its repertoire for a while, rearranged and updated for their current release. It typifies the band's sound in a power ballad, and the longing in the lyrics is echoed in the tone of lead singer Brian Healy's voice.

In fact, the emotion in his tone could be this band's X-factor. With the right pacing and inflection, he could believably convey the passion he feels for an elusive lifelong ambition while performing the Oscar Mayer Wiener song.

Elias is currently touring cross-country to promote Lasting Distraction, and with the right listeners in the audience, the pop-rock stylings of this band could quickly find their way onto national airwaves. Their songs carry the potential for mass appeal and tremendous commercial success.

Elias is creating music that many bands wish they could make. Unfortunately, it also happens to be the music that many bands have already made.
