International students partake in Canadian tradition
The Christmas season is fast approaching and the International department at Fanshawe College is making it that much easier for students to join in the festivities.
The international department along with public relations students at Fanshawe are joining forces to put together an unforgettable holiday feast on Thursday, November 26.
The International Christmas luncheon will take place in the Alumni Lounge in the Student Centre (just above the Oasis) from noon to 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person.
Fanshawe College is home to approximately 600 international students and the special holiday feast allows second language students to see exactly what a traditional Canadian Christmas involves.
“The whole process is amazing for the students as it gives an idea to the students about what Christmas in Canada is all about,” said Susan Sczypyha, international home stay/residence coordinator at Fanshawe College and one of the organizers for the annual International Dinner.
International students in many cases reside with home stay families for the duration of their academic year.
The home stay families along with the International Department on campus act as a second family to the students who are in Canada without their family and friends, added Sczypyha.
The three-course dinner will include turkey along with all the fixings and will have a variety of selections including vegetarian, which must be stated at the time of ticket purchase from the International office in E2025.
Annually approximately 70 International students, along with their home stay families and staff come to enjoy Canada's Christmas traditions with old and newly made friends.
“It (international dinner) is important because it shows the international students how we in Canada celebrate the holidays,” said Rob McGarry, a postgraduate Public Relations student and member of S.A.C. at Fanshawe.
Fanshawe College offers five levels of English as a Second Language classes. The classes allow ESL students to enter the University of Western Ontario, Huron University College, King's University College and Brescia University.
In addition to its ESL programs, Fanshawe encourages qualified international students to enroll in any of its 100+ full-time programs. Fanshawe has even developed a special international stream of its General Arts and Sciences program, intended for international students interested in continuing on into a university program.
The Oasis will cater the dinner.
