At first glance the 6'5” middle Matt Wilson looks like any other Fanshawe student, but on the court he transforms into an intimidating giant in the centre. Born and raised in London, Wilson has ironically enough not seen as much volleyball play as one would expect.

“I actually am one of the few players who never played club volleyball,” admitted Wilson. “I was always the basketball guy in high school. I love volleyball and when I came to Fanshawe I decided that I would be a better fit on the volleyball team than the basketball team.”

The John Paul II graduate had a few things to say about last week's game against Mohawk when the team fell short of win.

“I personally concentrated on my serving, but I noticed that we didn't play as a team very well,” said Wilson. “They basically gave us the first set with all their mistakes, but as soon as they tightened up on their serving and keeping the ball in, they started taking the lead.”

After an intense battle neither the men nor women Falcon's volleyball teams could take a win from the Mohawk Mountaineers. None of the players were pleased with either loss. Mohawk has been the bane of Fanshawe volleyball for some time.

“Our chemistry is struggling; we need to get together as a team,” said Wilson. “As we train together and the season continues we will gel, our work ethic will improve and all the guys will take it very seriously. It's a long season, and there is a lot of time to improve before playoffs in February.”

According to men's head coach Josh Westgate, team chemistry is something they have been trying to work on.

“The guys hang out a lot together. All of them seem to get along quite well which is illustrated in weekend get togethers (which I sometimes hear about),” said Westgate. “I think it's really important to understand each other off the court. We spend so much time on the court we sometimes forget what our teammates likes, dislikes are off the court. Everyone is different and having that respect on and off the court is vital for chemistry.

“This year we have implemented team yoga and Pilates two-three times at week at 6:30 a.m. This has gotten us to bond off the court and it is still volleyball related, but it also gives a chance to do something very different off the court. We spend a lot of time together. Lots of team dinners. I've told them that a lot of teams who do well are not necessarily the most talented, but the team that likes playing together the most.”

Even with the disappointing loss to Mohawk Wilson stays positive.

“If we work on the little things, especially finishing games, we will be a very hard team to defeat.”
