Capitalism: A Love Story (2009)

Capitalism: A Love Story is the latest documentary by well renowned film artist Michael Moore that begins with footage of American citizens being forced from their homes by the law for having unpaid bills. The movie continues through a cycle of questions and answers about why the capitalist system has done the nation wrong, and how a free market is not the best solution for the common good, even though we are taught to believe so.

This was not one of Moore's stronger documentaries as it was a bit difficult to understand at times. The beginning was very confusing and I didn't quite understand the relevance of what I was watching to the rest of the film until closer to the end. But the message that Moore is attempting to express in this movie is right on the mark. I completely agree with the simple version of what he was trying to say, which basically is “Greed is bad and compassion is good.”

Michael Moore

Moore always likes to mix comedy with his messages, which was very entertaining although I wasn't quite following what was going on. I particularly enjoyed his interview with religious figures which basically descriped capitalism as an evil.

What comepletely lost me was the section where Moore starts explaining the stock market. I believe it was meant to confuse the viewer, as Moore himself seemed slightly bewildered by the definition of a “derivative.”

U.S. president Barack Obama is looked upon in a very respected and hopeful light in this movie. The character he portrays is almost one as a hero; a saviour of the American people from the greedy capitalistic society.

The movie also sheds some light on the negative view of the term “socialism” and how this term may have brought unwarrented misunderstanding and fear to those who value capitalism.

This movie is definitely not for everyone. Although I believe everyone should be exposed to these messages and agree with most of the statements made in the documentary, I am not sure if the film is designed to teach people who are not informed rather than to discuss issues with people who are knowledgable of this information. If anything, the movie does spark some questions and encourages some further personal research into the subject.
