Very pretty but fairly plain
Courtney Farquhar: Nowhere I'd Rather Be
Canadian singer/songwriter Courtney Farquhar's debut album, Nowhere I'd Rather Be, is lovely music — the kind that will remind you of spring right in the middle of this sometimes-bleak winter season.
However, it also sounds like a lot of other female “coffee house” artists out there — which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But if you're looking for something ground-breaking, this isn't it.
Nevertheless, if you're in the mood for a little girl-loves-boy story-telling and general romanticism — she's got the perfect songs for you. More Than Anything, and Nowhere I'd Rather Be featuring fellow Canadian singer Ron Sexsmith have got the right amount of saccharine to make you smile without making you gag.
Other songs like We're All The Same, I Know Better and What We Don't Say explore a more melancholy side of love — but Farquhar's sultry voice, with its hint of optimism permeates throughout the entire album.
All the songs feel tinged with a bit of jazz and even a little country in the way they each seem to tell a story. Eyes Painted Blue offered something slightly different — giving the listener the feeling of being on a gondola in Venice rather than in a backyard under the stars in Ontario, for example.
She's also got her share of Canadian talent on the album, with the aforementioned Sexsmith and famed singer/songwriter Mary Margaret O'Hara
Based in Toronto, Farquhar made her debut onto the music scene back in 2004 after her song That's What Happens appeared on Warner Music's Women and Songs 7. Farquhar then released a six-song EP and toured around Canada and Europe.
