Rawkin: Out Back packed and groovin

Welcome back Fanshawe to the almost always Free New Music Friday's in The Out Back Shack! This past Friday we were treated to the grooving sounds of three bands: High Tides, Brownsyn Jerome and The Johnstones.

High Tides

Who They Are: High Tides is “White” Ben Feuerstein — guitar/vox; Andrew Bragg — guitar/vox; “Brown” Ben Clyne — bass; and Jason “Sexy” Jupp — drums. You can find more info on them at their site www.myspace.com/hightidestunes or on Facebook.

Some of their biggest influences are Sublime, Pacifier, Bob Marley; their moms, classic rock and a big mixture of everything. They all come from different backgrounds and musical tastes. While they play various venues, they really love playing their shows in their basement and hosting a kegger. They live right near Fanshawe so if you get a chance check them out! They wanted Fanshawe to know “We get drunk, we get high and we make reggae music! We love to play and want to do this for a living!”

How They Did: Despite the band being REALLY late, they got on stage and had a good groove going on! The Out Back was already getting a good crowd going and people were dancing and grooving and partying. Their set was a little rushed so there wasn't a lot of conversing with the crowd as they were pushing through their set. Reggae always puts people in a good mood and gets people moving. They made up for being late with a great set!

Who They Are: Brownsyn Jerome is Luke Klingenberg — drums/backup vox; Trevor Walsh — bass/backup vox; Eric Den Hollander — keyboards and Dave Usselman — guitar/lead vox (also a 2nd year in Music Industry Arts). More info on them at their website www.myspace.com/brownsynjerome or on Facebook.

Their favourite parts about playing live shows is the adrenaline, free drinks and the dream of playing live. I also asked what does it take to be in a band or a performing artist these days. They replied, “Dedication, a sense of humour, small egos and time!” Fun Fact: their mascot is Jerome, a rubber chicken. Three songs to get a sense of who they are: Fearer Loather, There's No Such Thing as Real Jobs and Mustard Tiger.

How They Did: The crowd was pumped and the Out Back was pretty packed by this point. The second song they played was an original called Bully. The music was very ska/reggae and Usselman, the lead vocalist, encouraged crowd participation by offering free EPs to people who got the craziest in the crowd! He also gave the meaning to a few songs and had the crowd sing along. A very good performance, check them out as they do a lot of shows!

Who They Are: The Johnstones are Ryan “Curly” Long — drums/lead vox; Jarek Hardy — guitar/lead vox; Rene Gillezeau — guitar/trumpet/MC; Mike Murphey- drums; Brent Marks — bass; Julian Warmé — trombone/keys. Find more info on them at www.myspace.com/thejohnstones; www.johnstonessex.com; www.youtube.com/phatbredrens and Facebook.

I was very excited the band had a horn section — trumpet and trombone — that has real parts rather than just putting accents in on the ska music. They feel they are a little bit of everything including hip hop and ska and everything in between. I asked them if they write together or separately. Hardy told me he and Long write pretty much everything. “I can't speak for Ryan but I can't sleep without writing something. We live together so that makes it easy, then we bring it to the rest of the band and they put a new flavour to it!” They are currently working on a new album and they want everyone to check it out when it's released!

How They Did: An exciting fresh breath of air! They had a packed house and did they ever wow me! I have to say that the energy these guys put out and the theatrics were crazy! The band knew their show inside and out, and they were still able to improvise. Everything from their entrance to the ending was good. The fact that their energy radiated from start to finish was impressive in itself but how they integrated the trumpet and trombone while those guys still played the keys and guitar, along with the sheer activity of jumping around and moving in sync with each other was really exciting. It was a crazy night on the stage. They engaged the audience and wowed their fans and in the process earned a few more fans! Definitely one of the best shows I have seen thus far on a New Music Friday! Check them out and see for yourself!

So that's all from me this week! Don't forget to email me with anything and let me know what's happening Fanshawe! Come out next week and see the great talent that we get to experience every week! Until next week keep on RAWKIN!
