Golden fashion moments at Globes

The 67th annual Golden Globe Awards were recently held in Beverly Hills California. The red carpet pre-show is always all about the gossip and the fashion; who came with who, who's wearing who and what did they accessorize with? It's definitely a chance for stars to show off some glamorous gowns that may not be suitable for many other occasions. Tons of big name celebrities brushed shoulders on the red carpet but many were huddled under golf umbrellas due to the rain. Lots of jokes were made about the unexpected rain in California - in particular the women dressed in nudes or whites that might suffer the indignity of having their garments become see-through. Regardless of the weather everyone looked like they were enjoying themselves and enjoying the press. To be fair, if I was wearing a stunning Versace gown I'd want to be photographed too.

Sandra Bullock wearing Bottega Veneta at the Golden GlobesPale nudes were definitely the top colour of choice for dresses; Maggie Gyllenhaal wore a heavenly dress by Roland Mouret with folds of fabric decorating a tight silhouette that released at the knees to a mermaid style train of flounces. Vogue did a top 10 list of the best dresses on the runway and nominated Gyllenhaal as best dressed. Some other women who had the same colours in mind when selecting their outfit include Drew Barrymore, decked out in Atelier Versace that was seen by everybody when she accepted her award for “Best Performance By An Actress In A Miniseries Or Motion Picture Made For Television” for her work on Grey Gardens (HBO). Emily Blunt wore a light pink strapless gown by Dolce & Gabbana, adorned with flowing folds and ripples of soft tulle fabrics. Some chic black dresses were spotted as well; some of my favourites being January Jones' Lanvin dress with a satin belt and collared neckline and asymmetrical flounces at one shoulder, she accessorized with a matching headband. Penelope Cruz wore vintage Armani Prive, black with horizontal stripes, lace at bust and sleeves and tiers of fabric from her knees to the floor. Kate Winslet chose black Yves Saint Laurent, Jennifer Aniston in black Valentino, Courtney Cox Arquette in a strapless black Victoria Beckham dress garnished with Lorraine Schwartz jewels at the belt, and the lovely and legendary Sophia Loren really turned heads in her black hourglass Armani Prive frock with a plunging sweetheart neckline.

Diamonds and beads on dresses were very common- the most beautiful and probably most expensive being Jennifer Garner's Atelier Versace dress with Bulgari jewels, but Anna Paquin also showed off some glimmer in a golden Stella McCartney gown. I found Ferragamo shoes to be the most popular choice for the evening, with good reasoning, but the most popular accessory had to be the rainbow coloured ribbons worn to support relief efforts for victims of the Haiti earthquake. Many celebs voiced their concern on the matter with George Clooney even stating that he was up three days straight working on putting together a telethon with proceeds to go to Haiti relief. Also, Chrysler teamed up with the Golden Globes and donated a 2010 Chrysler 300c Sedan that will be auctioned to raise money for Haiti earthquake relief efforts. Celebrities gathered around to sign the car - everyone from Paul McCartney to Nicole Kidman to Leona Lewis.

Other stunningly dressed winners included Mo'Nique who wore a golden strapless floor length dress by Reem Acra; she won for “Best Performance By An Actress In A Supporting Role In A Motion Picture” in Precious; based on the novel Push by Sapphire. Chloe Sevigny looked gorgeous in a pale rose Valentino gown covered in ruffles and cascades - but the “Big Love” star had a bit of a fashion mishap when someone stepped on her train on-stage. My honourable mentions include Ginnifer Goodwin for her beautiful short royal blue Vionnet dress, Cameron Diaz for her simple but elegant Alexander McQueen red satin dress and cowl neckline, and Kate Hudson for her white, strapless Marchesa gown - it's architectural design reminded me of a lavish wedding cake. But, I had to pick a favourite and my award goes to Sandra Bullock for best dressed of the night. Not only is she one of my all-time favourite actresses, she won an award that night for “Best Performance By An Actress In A Motion Picture — Drama” for her work in The Blind Side, and looked absolutely dazzling in a Bottega Veneta dress in a gorgeous orchid tone that was completely unique to other dresses of the night and made her eyes simply sparkle. Strapless with an empire waist, it was constructed with a sort of see-through fabric that revealed a bit of her legs. All in all the most common designers showcased were Versace, Armani Prive and Valentino, but every starlet in every gown supported their favourite fashion choices honourably.
