A game of passion for women

Fanshawe's women's basketball program is a state of the art program, with many top players from all over Ontario coming to play for the team.

This season the ladies are racking up some serious stats with Alison Griffiths averaging 15.83 points per game, closely followed by Kaitlind Dutrizac with 10.50 points per game. From the free throw line Griffiths holds a solid 50 per cent average. As you can see the women's team isn't shy from behind the offensive lines. For defense the women are quite good at stealing the ball with four players holding over 20 steals each. Griffiths tops the assists list with 29. Dutrizac has 22 assists and Jessica Finlay has 21.

Fanshawe's Alison Griffiths runs the floor during the Falcons home game versus Sheridan. Despite Griffiths team high 16 points and seven steals, the Falcons came up short losing to the Bruins 58-43. The Falcons record sits at 5-4, good for third in the West Division.

Griffiths is quite a unique person to talk to because for such an all around player, she sure knows how to make a statement on the court. Griffiths intends to travel to Italy once she is finished at Fanshawe. She said it would be a dream to play international basketball for her home country. International basketball is quite unique as teams travel, play and compete against different countries and players. She said she would definitely soak up the experience of being able to play against all different types and styles of players.

Another player I had the chance to speak with is Jordan Gubbels.

“Basketball is a way for you to express yourself out on the court and prove to your teammates what you are truly capable of. Also I like being able to keep athletic and being able to run the court,” she said.

Basketball is more than a game at Fanshawe. It also gives its players a chance to consider their futures and most of all their presents in terms of passion and dedication to the game.
