Rawkin: Out Back get's PUNK'D

I hope you all had a RAWKIN' week of classes and homework and the various entertainment around the college! My advice is to take advantage of EVERYTHING the college has to offer to its students including the almost always FREE New Music Fridays, where the opportunity of seeing new and local bands of all genres is always possible.

This past Friday we saw The Stiff Wires — a local London Band with members from the Music Industry Arts Program here at Fanshawe, and The Creepshow. This week I was unfortunately unable to get interviews due to time restrictions and still have not received responses to email interviews at this time. I did review the show and enjoyed what I saw though! Also this past Tuesday; second year MIA students had their own showcase which I also reviewed and I will just give you a brief rundown of what transpired at both shows.

Who they are: The Stiff Wires are a punk band who have been featured on Much Music show Disband Season 2 and on their Myspace page: www.myspace.com/thestiffwires they have bios and a four-part interview in their music player by Indie Love that will tell you all about them.

How they did: The band came out to a thriving crowd and there was a lot of electricity in the air. They are a local band and they had a lot of their adoring crowd out to support them as well as new fans. A lot of mosh-dancing was going on at the front of the stage and overall, the performances were very good. Their music has a very “stick it to the man” feel to it. Not to mention great punk sounds and rhythms coupled with bouncing around the stage.

Who they are: The Creepshow are a Toronto punk band, defined by their blend of different musical genres. Fronted by “The Reverend” McGinty and the beautiful and talented Sarah “Sin” Blackwood; along with Sean “Sick Boy” McNab and Matt “Pomade” Gee. There is a lot of info on this band on their Myspace page www.myspace.com/thecreepshow and there's also a very good interview in the last Interrobang issue, so I won't go over the same stuff again.

How they did: People were chanting for them to hit the stage and you could feel the energy. When they came out there were a lot of fans in the OBS. Girls were wearing flowers in their hair, mimicking Sarah's flower. The music was fantastic as the crowd began moshing and some people were ejected from the Out Back. The band asked them to not eject people for “dancing” and said the new rule was “if someone punches someone in the face then you can kick them out.”

It was getting pretty rowdy in there and it appeared that a few people were moshing too hard and a few had visible limps when the show was over. In the security's defense, they were doing an excellent job. Their number one priority is the safety of everyone in the OBS.

During the show there was a game played and Happy Birthday was sung to McGinty, as well as a round of applause for the drummer who just got engaged. They had a wide array of merch and overall it was a great set and a great night. Check them out if you are into punk or rock and a little bit of pop!

Lastly just touching on the MIA event, second year showcase held on Monday February 1. This was also a no cover show that was open to all students. I didn't see a diversity of students from other programs in the college, although there were some. There was a wide array of music from solo artists, bands and other acts that were from every end of the spectrum as far as genres. There was something for everyone.

So come out to the New Music Fridays and all the events happening here at the college and get your music fix on! Participate and enjoy what college life has to offer to you sometimes for FREE and sometimes for a small cover but ALWAYS a great time! Email me with questions or comments and until next week KEEP ON RAWKIN'!
