Most people regard the Golden Globe awards as the “poor man's Grammy's,” so I knew there would be no justice if I reported on the fashions of one award's show and not the other. The 52nd annual Grammy's, hosted in L.A., were in my opinion more entertaining than the Golden Globes, (but still not as much drama as the last MTV VMAs), and had enough bizarre outfits to review which kept us fashion critics happy.

Pink in a strapless grey mermaid gown at the Grammy Awards. There are some definite differences between the fashion trends of musicians and actors. I'm sure they all still intend to look glamorous and portray some vision of beauty, but music's leading ladies have without a doubt made a point that simplicity is out the window; everyone is trying to compete for the wildest, most outrageous outfits and performances.

I've loved Lady Gaga from the start. She knows her fashion and I can usually respect her wardrobe choices, but sometimes I do think it's possible for her to still get the reaction she wants without all the ostentation. The gossip before the show about Gaga was that she was going to be modeling five different dresses by Armani Privé throughout the course of the night. The first dress she was seen in was crazy couture; spirals of silver- toned light lavender that was very beautiful, but I absolutely could not stand her hair and make-up. Her hair, blonde and yellow, reminded me of when my friends have tried to bleach their brown hair and went orange. The make up was so heavily caked on that I remembered why she sometimes gets mistaken for a transvestite. I love the woman, but I think her definition of beautiful is skewed. I've seen what her face looks like with little to no make-up and I have always preferred natural beauty instead of thick layers of shadows and liners.

Her opening-show performance with Elton John was entertaining, but other than that and the red carpet, she didn't get much attention and we really didn't get to see that much of the five gowns; she only won two Grammys.

There were however, some classy ladies that went for elegance and poise when photographed on the red carpet. Nicole Kidman's black Prada dress had just the right balance of conservative and sexy, accessorized with Fred Leighton jewels. Keri Hilson followed a key spring/summer 2010 trend with her nude coloured dress with a mermaid style train by Dolce & Gabbana. Recently engaged and just returning from India, Katy Perry wore a nude Zac Posen gown and glittered tiny golden flowers embroidered on. Jennifer Hudson also looked classy in a black Victoria Beckham dress, as did Sheryl Crow in a flattering Bottega Veneta gown. My favourite look of this category goes to Colbie Caillat, she won the Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals shared with Jason Mraz, and looked stunning in a sparkling dark gold dress that showed some leg underneath dreamy layers of tulle, designed by Badgley Mischka.

But, the flashy show-stopping gowns still beat out the simple elegant looks, and even some unexpected celebs went over the top to gain the paparazzi's attention. Following Gaga's lead was Ciara; Givenchy Haute Couture that was see through to a sort of bodysuit underneath; Jennifer Lopez showing a lot of leg in a shiny Versace dress; and Rihanna looking a little strange in a high neck white Elie Saab Haute Couture gown with feathered ruffles that just didn't do it for me. Céline Dion wore a pretty out-there gown (trying to fit in with the younger crowd of superstars?) and was decked out in Lorraine Schwartz jewels on an Aquilano.Rimondi dress.

Beyoncé and Taylor Swift took reign of the evening, but it was not battle between the two. I think that they equally shared the spotlight, and came close with the number of wins. Beyoncé racked them up though, with a total of six Grammys for the evening. She looked classic on the red carpet wearing Stéphane Rolland, but changed into something a little more edgy for her performance - black leather Versace. Taylor Swift, who is one of my favourite musicians, looked sophisticated and beautiful in an off-the-shoulder dark blue gown by Kaufman Franco. She won four Grammys, the most notable and prestigious being “Album of the Year.” She did still show us her teenager side for her performance, in a cute peasant top with tight black leggings. The only mishap she had of the evening was dropping and breaking one of her Grammys. Luckily, there was so much going on not too many people noticed.

And finally, Pink. Her performance was the most talked about of the show, a strange Cirque du Soleil piece where she wore what looked like strips of masking tape. The audience was totally perplexed, and the acrobatics had people thinking she is definitely following Lady Gaga's footsteps to get the publicity. However, putting all musical and performance notes aside, when it came down the red carpet fashion and the best looks of the night, I much preferred Pink's strapless grey mermaid gown. It had sparkling stones at the waist and bust and was covered with layers of scallop trim that faded from light grey to black. Overall critics were pleased with her look and I favoured it above the rest.
