Falcons fighting for playoff lives as season ends

Sixteen games and counting have been played by Fanshawe's men's volleyball team, and we have followed them all the way from the start. We have watched them grab great success, and also seen them hit a low stride. But one thing to be noted, as Fanshawe moves towards the playoffs, is how the team has always rebounded from a loss.

And as Fanshawe moves into the playoffs, with this week's away game against Sheridan and then next week's season ending game against rival Mohawk, we need to examine how the team can do.

The playoffs, in a sense, is just another tournament, but the title gives you the opportunity to win a national medal. So let's look at the Falcons' tournament record, and see where that places them.

Fanshawe's men's volleyball team heads into the final stretch of the season
fighting to make the playoffs. Their game versus Mohawk will be key.

In the past season, the Falcons have played in three different tournaments, one at Fanshawe, one at Humber, and the final one at Seneca. Fanshawe won two of the tournaments, the Fanshawe and Seneca tournaments, and placed second in the Humber tournament. Now this is impressive for a team placed fifth in their division. The tournament wins are to be expected from teams such as Redeemer or Trent, who currently sit at the top of their divisions. If we examine the tournament win record we should surmise that the Falcons should play extremely well in the playoffs. But Fanshawe needs to make it to playoffs first.

“Basically we have gotten to the point where every game is a playoff game,” said coach Josh Westgate. “We haven't technically made the playoffs yet, I figure we need at least one more win in our last few games of the season.”

This is crunch time for Fanshawe. They play two teams who are currently sitting in playoff spots. The league is divided into two divisions, East and West. In the East division the top four spots for playoffs belong to, in order from first to fourth: Trent, Algonquin, Loyalist, and Seneca. In the West division the spots currently belong to, again in order from first to fourth: Redeemer, Humber, Nipissing, and Mohawk, with Fanshawe nipping at Mohawk's heels. The Falcons are one win behind Mohawk, and if they get that key victory against Mohawk in the season finale, it could put Fanshawe into the playoffs.
