Shutter Island lives up to hype

Shutter Island (2010)

Filled with suspense, a chilling soundtrack and haunting visuals, Shutter Island will have you feeling uneasy for the duration of the film. Directed by Martin Scorsese, Shutter Island is based on the novel written by Dennis Lehane. Comprised of a wonderful cast this intriguing story will keep you captivated.

Mark Ruffalo and Leonardo DiCaprio star in Shutter Island.

From the opening scene we're thrown into the story and introduced to U.S. Marshall Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his new partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo). The two men are on a ferry to Shutter Island where only the most dangerous psychiatric patients are held in isolation. Invited in to investigate the mysterious disappearance of one female patient, the marshalls explore a very strange case. Desperate for answers but surrounded by the dangerously insane, the investigation proves to be incredibly difficult. With many twists in the story, and conflicting underlying themes of family, conspiracy, and murder, the plot will keep you guessing from start to finish.

Once again Scorsese has perfectly cast DiCaprio in a character with deep emotional layers and a horrifying past. He really connects with the audience and allows viewers to believe and feel what he portrays. Along with DiCaprio, Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams and Emily Mortimer bring the creepy characters to life. The cast, as a whole, make the on-screen characters so human that it is hard to distinguish between feelings of disgust and compassion for what they've suffered.

The dark and twisted story will have you feeling a range of emotions from excited and nervous to sad and fearful. As the plot progresses the audience finds itself caught up in the story and unaware of what is reality and what is not. Shutter Island is, in itself, an experience. Though there are aspects left unexplained the whole world Scorsese brought to life is fascinating. The film will keep you guessing but is worth the price of admission to see awesome performances and a unique film from an incredibly talented director!
