NFL Czar: Stacking the franchises up

We are just under a month away from the NFL Draft, and it should be very exciting. However, there have been a lot of developments in the last month that have changed how the 32 NFL teams stack up at this point. So, here are my NFL Power Rankings for this week.

1. New Orleans Saints — The defending champs are the team to beat until proven otherwise, and haven't undergone any major changes in personnel. A strong draft focused on defensive issues will make them even harder to beat next year.

The Next Wave
2. Indianapolis Colts
3. Minnesota Vikings
4. New York Jets
5. Dallas Cowboys
6. New England Patriots

Any of these teams could easily make a run at the Super Bowl next season. However, each team also has key issues to address. For example, the Colts have defensive issues, the Vikings have a Favre issue and the Jets need Mark Sanchez to continue his development. The Cowboys and Patriots are both teams that are a player or two away from competing as well.

Rest of the Top 10
7. Baltimore Ravens
8. Green Bay Packers
9. Pittsburgh Steelers
10. San Diego Chargers

The Ravens are going to be a force this year, after adding Anquan Boldin to the mix. The Packers are expected to take the next step and compete for the NFC North crown this year. The Steelers missed the playoffs in 2009, but do you really think they won't bounce back? The Chargers will have to compensate for the loss of LaDainian Tomlinson, but they are expected to draft a RB.

Bubble Teams
11. Philadelphia Eagles
12. Cincinnati Bengals
13. Houston Texans
14. Atlanta Falcons
15. Denver Broncos

These five teams will be fighting for their playoff lives from the beginning. All of these teams have major offseason issues to address, but they will all be expected to be in the hunt in 2010. The Texans are still looking for their first playoff berth, but are definitely on the right track. The Broncos and Eagles have quarterback battles to deal with, but they should be resolved by training camp.

Rebuilding Time?
16. New York Giants
17. Arizona Cardinals
18. Chicago Bears
19. Tennessee Titans
20. San Francisco 49ers
21. Seattle Seahawks
22. Carolina Panthers

The only team on this short list that isn't rebuilding is the 49ers, but they are still looking to get back into the playoff hunt. QB issues haunt all seven (OK, maybe Eli Manning isn't an issue anymore, but still). The Seahawks, Panthers and Titans need to start re-building, and it looks like they all got the message, due to their offseason moves thus far. Meanwhile, the Bears have been the most active in free agency, but will that translate into wins?

The Rest...
23. Miami Dolphins
24. Jacksonville Jaguars
25. Buffalo Bills
26. Kansas City Chiefs
27. Oakland Raiders
28. Washington Redskins
29. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
30. Detroit Lions
31. Cleveland Browns
32. St Louis Rams

What do you say about these teams, most of them are a complete mess. Expect all of them to be very active in the draft, and hopefully they will start to turn their franchises around. The Jags, Dolphins and Bills are closer than most, but each have glaring needs that have to be addressed.

Coming up next week, the top 16 picks in my NFL mock draft. The St Louis Rams will be on the clock only 20 days from now, so I will take a look at who should go in the first half of round one on April 22.
