JRMAs celebrate local talent

This year's Jack Richardson Music Awards may have been long, but only because it was jampacked with some of the best musical talent London has to offer.

Taking place at the London Music Hall on April 11, a packed audience was treated to a night of new and old local favourites.

“It had its wonderful moments,” said John Young, chair of the JRMAs, adding that one such moment was a three-song performance by JRMA Hall of Fame inductees, Kittie.

It was a diverse mix of audience members — all ages came out for the evening, with more young people than years past, said Young. The committee has been striving to engage more youth in the competition so their increased attendance was exciting.

The show did start late, and went on longer than intended — with the two Hall of Fame winners, the Amabile Choirs and Kittie, performing — but there was enough entertainment to keep people tapping their feet.

Next year, the show may be split into a reception beforehand, then the performances to follow to also solve the issue of the chatter at the bar, said Young.

Local artists who did perform were Allison Brown — who went on to win contemporary singer/songwriter; jazz quartet After Four; the Dixie Flyers — who took home the award for best bluegrass band; the Blues Masters; traditional folk band, Fraser; and rock group, A Horse and His Boy.

Another treat was the Dennis Brown Life Time Achievement Award recipient, Graham Lear. Originally from the UK, Lear was brought up in London and quickly became a drumming prodigy at 13 years old when Orchestra London featured him. He has worked with big names like REO Speedwagon and Santana, and currently performs with the Paul Anka orchestra.
