Michael Enright was arrested by New York police in late August. He was charged with attempted murder as a hate crime for stabbing a New York cab driver after asking if he was a Muslim. No link has been made to the attack and the controversy surrounding the proposed mosque near Ground Zero. The driver is alive and was treated for cuts to his throat, forearm, upper lip and thumb.

Thirty three miners are trapped inside the collapsed San Jose mine in Copiapo, Chile. They have been there since August 5 and rescue teams are hesitant to say when exactly they'll be rescued — it is possible it may take up to four months. Rescuers are currently applying a holistic approach to the miners wellbeing, finding ways to support them physically and psychologically during this time, while ensuring they don't gain weight so they can fit through the 35 inch escape tunnel being cut through solid rock.

Lindsay Lohan has been released from rehab and is now undergoing counseling as part of her outpatient programming. Lohan was sentenced to 90 days in prison and 90 days in rehab on July 6 but only served 13 days of that sentence due to jail overcrowding.

Following a landmark vote in July, the parliament of Catalonia has banned bullfighting after a petition was set before them with signatures of over 18,000 individuals, led by animal rights activists. The corrida (bullfight) is a Spanish tradition and lasts about 20 minutes. The bull is repeatedly stabbed and then killed by a sword between its shoulder blades. Catalonia is the first mainland region of Spain to ban the tradition.

As of August 1, drivers 21 years of age and under must register a zero per cent blood alcohol level, regardless of what level of licence they have. The law affects any new driver for their first year on the road, regardless of their age. Drivers 21 years of age and younger may also have only one passenger under the age of 19. Failure to follow these rules will result in an immediate 24-hour licence suspension, and possible further suspension and fine.

After a summer of controversial decisions, the Western Fair Association decided to allow free admission for people with disabilities but children from five to 10 years old will need to pay admission. These changes come along with 20 per cent hikes to regular admission across the board. Their decision was made in light of the backlash from the public and local media.

On July 5, an explosion at a hydro station at Kipling and Norseman caused a power outage that affected hundreds of people. Citizens turned to Twitter to communicate areas in the city that still had power or not, corralled by social sites like Torontoist, while traditional newspaper outlets posted only minor updates on their websites. The first case of biking while texting was reported in Owen Sound after a 16- year-old slammed into a vehicle and was thrown into its rear window. He was treated for cuts and released. He was charged with careless driving.
