On behalf of the Fanshawe Student Union, I'd like to say how proud we are that you decided to start or continue an education. Wherever you go, and whatever you do, you will always have your education, and it will benefit you and your community for as long as you live, and maybe even after. That's something you should be proud of as well.

This year, I work for you as Fanshawe Student Union president. My position is fulltime, and I just completed the television broadcasting - digital post-production graduate program. I started as president in May, and my summer has been spent planning and strategizing for September and onward. So this is it! Now the pre-season is over and we can get down to business!

Fanshawe is the greatest school I have ever come across. We have top-notch services, facilities, faculty, support staff, programs, athletes, residences and more. The motto of the college is “Community Driven ... Student Focused,” and it's very evident to me that it holds itself very closely to this standard. But like everything, it isn't perfect. It's expensive, for one thing. You can scoff at the parking rates, the food prices, and the cost of your education, but assure yourself we still have it very good at Fanshawe College. We have every opportunity to succeed here and become what we want to be in life.

This is the place where you're going to meet your life-long friends, resourceful mentors, future co-workers and, quite possibly, your life partner. This is where your network grows tenfold, and when they say, “It's not what you do, it's who you know,” you couldn't be in a better position. But what you do is actually a very big part of it as well. You need to do things to get to know people, so make good use of every service and opportunity offered to you here.

When I decided to go to college I didn't really understand any of what I've been discussing so far. Instead I just saw this place as a barrier between a job and myself. I wanted to get in, get out and move on with my life. It was a friend in MIA who really got through to me. He told me he had been spending a lot of hours after class in the studio and with his teachers, and most students weren't. “I think it's because they don't realize that those work world connections are right here in our classroom. These professors have their own recording studios, they work with musicians' and they know everybody in the industry,” he said. After that, I got it.

The same thing can be said for every program at Fanshawe. We're not called a COMMUNITY college for nothing. Our strongest ties are with the community. I took television broadcasting, and we worked very closely with Rogers TV, even creating a television show they put to air. Do you think they hire a lot of Fanshawe grads at Rogers TV? You bet. Fanshawe could set an alumni office there.

And while most of what I'm saying is true in your classrooms, there's an even bigger part of Fanshawe out of the classroom that will aid you as well. Familiarize yourself with the links under the Student Services and Campus Life tabs of MyFanshawe to see what I mean.

By the way, MyFanshawe is new this year, and it's pretty sweet. I never had it as a student, and I'm jealous. They gave me access to it this year just to tease me.

And of course there's the Fanshawe Student Union. We're a lot bigger than you think. We represent and serve every full-time student of Fanshawe College here in London and also at our satellite campuses. That's around 16,000 students. Because of that, the college comes to us for input on things that they are working on. They truly value student input, and that is why I have sat on over 20 committees within the college thus far.

Our motto is “Students Serving Students,” so it's students who get to run the show. Student administrative council governs the union and is made up of students. The voting members on SAC are the five vice-presidents, and there are 10 empty seats to be filled in October by one student in every division of the college. Nominations have to be in by September 24 and elections are October 5 to 6. It's a great opportunity to step into a leadership position, have a say at the table and contribute to the college community. So think about it.

We are one of the best student associations in the province, and it's due in big part to our amazing staff. These are the guys and gals who run the Shack, the Oasis, the office, and the Interrobang, who sell the tickets, clean the place and so on. These people are the driving force of this organization, and they deserve endless amounts of recognition for that.

We do a lot more that I can't fit into this article, so check out FSU.ca and stay connected. FSU.ca has added a social media side to it — so you can interact with your friends, classmates and your student representation. So sign up, make frequent use of it and enjoy.

This year the FSU and Fanshawe are making the biggest effort yet to open the lines of communication between our services and the students at Fanshawe so we hope you're willing to take part. Give (constructive) feedback wherever you can. Make an effort to come to at least one event a week. Join a club, or a committee, or become a class rep. Use the websites - all of them. The amount of ways to get involved is endless, and it pays not always in money, but in skills learned and connections made.

Congrats and continued success.
Joe.
