Zoot: Refined, renewed and ready for school

As the summer slowly rolls to an end and the beginning of the school year is emerging faster than we know it, so are the fresh new men's fall trends. This season is all about refinement, taking older trends and revamping them so they create the perfect amount of sex appeal. We will see many styles reemerge with a new approach that, if put together properly, will create a handsome wardrobe. Making the three-piece suit a staple, resurrecting velvet attire and adding a futuristic flare to 20th century-inspired military wear are just a few of the upcoming fall trends for 2010.

The men's three-piece suit used to be a must-have for any wardrobe, but eventually died off and remained buried underground for the next forty years ... until now. Thanks to Giorgio Armani, Yves Saint Laurent and Prada, the three-piece suit has returned in full force. The suit used to be very extravagant in colour and pattern, but the 2010 three-piece is all about cohesion. If you wanting to make this an addition to your wardrobe, then the conservative approach is the most fashionable. Stick to one colour and avoid all patterns. However, if the conservative look isn't appealing, then add a pinstripe effect for that extra flare. Stick to one colour pallet, or you may end up looking like Jack Nicholson's the Joker!

When people hear that velvet is coming back in style, they run in fear and instantly think of Willy Wonka. Most of the male population opt for the safe route by wearing wool suits or sports jackets and avoid the more risqué, yet chic, velvet. Velvet is essential for all fashion forward males who want to make a statement with their look. By simply adding a velvet bow tie, you instantly create sex appeal to almost any outfit (as long as it's coordinated well). Wearing a velvet suit jacket is more daring but if it is form-fitting and has a classy appeal, it makes for stunning formal wear. Be careful in how much velvet you add to the outfit and the colours you use, because too much velvet and too bright colours results in a severe decrease of sex appeal and leaves you looking clown-like, or like Gossip Girl's Chuck Bass...unless that's what you want.

The next essential pieces to have as part of your wardrobe is updated military attire. Military-inspired clothing has been quite popular for the past two years, but the time has finally come to evolve it and make it even more wearable. Throw away the “You can't see me” shirts and invest in pieces inspired by the army and navy uniforms from the '30s and '40s, aviator boots and double breasted greatcoats with brass detailing are just a few essential examples of this trend.

Even though the school year is just around the corner, new trends make it all worthwhile. Fashion is never written in stone. Take the new fall trends and mould them so they fit your style to create a unique back to school wardrobe and stand out as a guy who actually looks like he knows what he's doing, more Don Draper — minus the boozing misogyny — and less The Situation.
