NATIONAL NEWS
The results of the U.S. midterm election are in. Democrats held onto their Senate majority, losing six seats but taking important races in Nevada, West Virginia and California. Republicans took previously Democratic seats from Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Arkansas, North Dakota, Indiana and Illinois. In the lower House, Republicans gained the majority of seats, meaning President Obama will depend on his Democratic-run Senate to follow his legislative agenda.

Indonesia has been hit with another massive natural disaster. On November 3, Mount Merapi erupted with its biggest blast yet. The eruption comes days after the last blast on October 26. According to a state volcanologist, this blast was three times the size of the first, reported The Star. Tens of thousands of villagers have been evacuated from the area since the volcano began erupting. As of November 3, there were 38 casualties.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS
It was a regular school day for University of Western Ontario students on November 3 as a tentative agreement for professors was reached at about 3 a.m. after an 18- hour negotiating session. No details have been released about the agreement, but the key issues were compensation and performance evaluations. Had the faculty gone on strike, 33,000 students would be affected as all classes, labs and tutorials would have been cancelled.

In Campbellford, Ontario, a Halloween costume party contest ended with controversial results. At a local Royal Canadian Legion, an individual dressed in a KKK robe leading a man on a rope in blackface won first prize. The mayor of the municipality has expressed his outrage at the event. The Legion involved has released an apology.
