Museum London gets JASS-y

Until November 21, Museum London is hosting a juried art show and sale of local artists.

Put on by Museum London's volunteer committee, JASS London has been a tradition of the museum and an outlet to showcase local artists' work while raising funds for the museum to purchase new pieces of art, said Sophie Skaith, past president of the volunteer committee and current chair of special events.

The show began on November 10 and runs from noon to 5 p.m. daily, except Mondays when the museum is closed.

The honourary chair of the event is artist Aidan Urquhart, whose patchwork house piece, "Sunshine Thoughts," provides the official image of this year's show. One of his pieces will also be part of the exhibit, and in addition to the jury's awards, he will be presenting one of his own.

This year's jury consists of Brian Meehan, executive director of Museum London, Madeline Lennon, former University of Western Ontario visual arts chair, and Patrick Mahon, the immediate past chair of UWO'S visual arts program.

"It makes a huge difference for us to have a jury of professionals," said Skaith.

The judging is done blindly, meaning the jury members do not know the artist of the work they're evaluating.

While the main focus of the night is to raise funds for the museum, the show also benefits the participating artists. "A wide variety of artists get a chance to sell and show their art," said Skaith.

"In a nutshell, it shows a lot of what's happening in the area right now (in terms of art)."

The artists receive promotion and a "very good commission," she added. "What the committee gets back goes back into the museum. It's a win-win."

The museum is also having two events in conjunction with JASS. Saturday, November 13 is a Java and Jazz show where people can peruse the paintings and listen to a jazz band. Admission is $20. On Saturday, November 20, and Sunday, November 21, there will be a Wearable Art Show featuring local, hand-made pieces such as jewelry, hats, scarves and more. Those in attendance can also check out JASS at no cost. For more information on JASS visit www.jasslondon.ca or the Wearable Art Show visit www.wearableartshow.com.
