Hey Fanshawe,

It's been getting very busy this month! I had expected my free time to be a little less scarce as we moved into Movember but I was dead wrong. Part of my position involves being the representative for students at various college functions, and that's been taking up a good amount of my time lately. Not that it's a bad thing though; we are very lucky to be at a college that celebrates your successes. The past few weeks have been full of that. I have been attending various awards banquets, recognizing the recipients of college-wide and program specific awards. Many of these awards are donor-funded, so it is a great way to allow the donor to meet the recipient of their award and present it to them.

The stories of success aren't just about students with straight A's; some of these recipients are students with straight A's who have managed to pull off the marks despite having other barriers in their way. Students with learning disabilities, students who have returned to college after 30 years, single mothers and international students who didn't even know English when they arrived here are all receiving awards in recognition of how hard they have worked to be successful at Fanshawe.

It's very humbling and also very motivating to be a part of these celebrations. I will be attending a few more of these ceremonies in the next few weeks — apparently we still have much more to celebrate.

This year you will see two new opportunities come out of the Fanshawe Student Union in regards to awards and scholarships. The first one is the College Student Alliance scholarship. This is open to any student in the college, and it is a $1,000 scholarship. Information will be available in our office, SC2001, and on our website, fsu.ca. Essentially we are looking for a student who has shown leadership qualities and has done some community service around the college or community. Applications are open now until December 17.

The second award is very similar, the FSU Leadership Award. This award focuses more on leadership qualities and applications will be out some time in the New Year. This isn't something that the Student Administrative Council can win though, we are looking for other student leaders out there and we know there are many of you! Athletes, club leaders, class reps, volunteers, anybody who has stepped up and done an extraordinary job at something is eligible for this award.

What we are really trying to do is get students to take an interest in leadership. It's a very important quality to have, especially at such a young age. There aren't always awards for leading a cause in life, but at Fanshawe there are!
