Impaired-ness awareness in Forwell Hall

The Fanshawe Student Union's second alcohol awareness week of the academic year kicks off on Tuesday, January 18.

"We do an alcohol awareness week every semester, just so that (everybody) ... is able to participate in them," explained Veronica Barahona, vice-president internal and organizer of the event.

An alcohol awareness week is especially important, as a new study released by British experts found that alcohol is more dangerous than illegal drugs such as heroin and crack cocaine. Alcohol was found to have more harmful effects on the human body, the home environment and can have a more severe economic impact — due to health care, social services and prison — than other drugs.

"Those awareness weeks are pretty important for our students," said Barahona, noting that students can struggle with issues surrounding alcohol in silence because they don't know where to go for help in the community.

MADD Canada will be present in Forwell Hall from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on January 18, and they're bringing a lot of equipment with them. "They're going to have the beer goggles, the driving simulator ... and lots of information," Barahona said.

On January 19, a trivia contest starts at noon in Forwell Hall. "(We're) asking students to come up and participate in alcohol and drug trivia," said Barahona. "Whoever knows the most could win some awesome prizes!"

Volunteers are needed for every event. For more information, or to volunteer for the events, contact Veronica Barahona: fsuinternal@fanshawec.ca.

Barahona, who plans all student centred events for the FSU, has high hopes for this semester's alcohol awareness week, and said she hopes a lot of students will show up for each event.

Another upcoming awareness event is Love Day in February. "We're bringing in organizations like the AIDS Committee of London, the Middlesex London Health Unit, the Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Treatment Centre of St. Joseph Hospital, Women's Community House, Changing Ways, Spectrum Fanshawe and Student Health Services at Fanshawe. It's going to be so much fun!" Love Day takes place on February 9 all day in Forwell Hall.
