NFL Czar: Top 10 stories of 2010

Boy oh boy, this season just doesn't get any easier to predict does it? Just when you think the playoffs will make things right in the NFL world, we have the 7-9 Seattle Seahawks taking down the defending Super Bowl champions. Then we had Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts fall to the New York Jets on a late Nick Folk field goal.

It was a crazy year, and for this week I will look at the top 10 stories from this NFL season.

10. Giants spoil the party: After starting 1-5, the Dallas Cowboys were looking to rebound in week seven with a home game against the G-Men. The night would soon turn into disaster. This was the night that Tony Romo broke his clavicle, and ended the Cowboys hopes of being the first team to play the Super Bowl in their home stadium.

9. L.T.'s resurgence: LaDainian Tomlinson was left for dead after leaving San Diego. Critics said that he was finished. Six touchdowns and 914 yards later, Tomlinson's career may not be finished after all. At age 31, L.T. averaged 4.2 yards per carry, his highest total since 2007.

8. Brandon who?: The Denver Broncos somehow had one of the leading passing attacks in the league this season. A large part of it was due to the explosion of former 49er wide receiver Brandon Lloyd. Lloyd led the NFL in receiving yards, and had 11 touchdowns.

7. Hail to the Chiefs: After a 4- 12 record a season ago, the Kansas City Chiefs rebounded by winning the AFC West Division. Sparked by the electric running abilities of RB Jamaal Charles, the Chiefs powered to a 10-6 record, and a spot in the AFC Wild Card round.

6. Roar of the Lions: After starting the season 2-10, the Detroit Lions ended their season in style, winning the final four games. They spoiled the playoff hopes of the Buccaneers, and did this all without starting quarterback Matt Stafford. This late-season run has sparked hopes that the Lions can make a run towards the playoffs next year.

5. Manning's midseason woes: There was a point in this season where the Indianapolis Colts were 6-6, and in grave danger of missing the playoffs. This was after a brutal, uncharacteristic stretch of games from quarterback Peyton Manning. Manning threw 11 interceptions over three games, the worst three-game stretch in his career.

4. End of "The Streak": After 297 consecutive starts, the legendary games started streak ended for Minnesota Vikings QB Brett Favre. A myriad of injuries resulted in Favre sitting out a rare Tuesday night game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The streak spanned 19 seasons, and it set an NFL record for the most consecutive starts for a quarterback.

3. Unlikely division champs: The Seattle Seahawks lost seven of their last 10 games, but they won when it counted. A week 17 victory over the St Louis Rams gave the Seahawks a 7-9 record, and the NFC West title. It was the first time in NFL history that a team with a losing record won a division, and in turn made the playoffs.

2. Brady's mastery: After a horrific loss to the Cleveland Browns, the New England Patriots rattled off eight victories in a row. A lot of those wins came from quarterback Tom Brady. He was absolutely brilliant this season. Brady didn't throw an interception in the final 10 games, and only threw four on the season. He will be the MVP.

1. The return of Mike Vick: Was there any other choice? This guy was in prison two years ago, and now he is a legitimate MVP candidate. His play this season helped the Eagles get over the loss of Donovan McNabb, and propelled them into the playoffs.

For next week, I'll take a look at the most overhyped game of the year, the Pro Bowl.
