So you think you can lead

First call for students who want to be the next leaders of the Fanshawe Student Union! This is a tremendous opportunity you don't want to pass up. Let me go over the details of the positions available:

Board of Governors' student representative - You are the student voice on the Fanshawe College Board of Governors and have a vote at the table on important issues affecting not just students, but the entire institution as a whole.

VP Athletics — You are the liaison between the FSU and Fanshawe Athletics and have a voice in determining the future direction of varsity, intramural and extramural athletics programming. You will help support the dance team, and also play a part in selecting student athletes to receive awards. You are also a member of the FSU executive and student council, and have a vote at the table on some very important issues that affect students.

VP Entertainment — You plan all the fun stuff. You work with our programmers to deliver a diverse set of entertainment to the students at Fanshawe. You manage the Fanshawe Underground Crew (F.U. Crew) who are your promotional team, and take care of securing sponsors for the larger events (such as the Arkells frosh concert). You are also a member of the FSU executive and student council, and have a vote at the table on some very important issues that affect students.

VP Internal Affairs — You are in charge of managing the club system; helping clubs get started, bringing their application to council for approval and hearing them out if they have any issues. You are also in charge of programming the awareness weeks (like Sue Johanson's visit this past sex awareness week) and organizing the Shinerama fundraiser. You are also a member of the FSU executive and student council, and have a vote at the table on some very important issues that affect students.

VP Finance — You are the liaison between the FSU and financial aid. You act as a resource to students who are looking for assistance in securing funding through OSAP, awards, scholarships and bursaries. You manage a financial marketing team of student staff who help market the free money available to students on campus. You also take part in the fee negotiation process and in setting the FSU's annual budget. You are also a member of the FSU executive and student council, and have a vote at the table on some very important issues that affect students.

VP External and Academic Affairs — You are the liaison between the FSU and the college. You act as a resource to students who are having issues with grades or anything college-related. You are responsible for getting the class rep system up and running and helping SAC reps manage that system. You are also a member of the FSU executive and student council, and have a vote at the table on some very important issues that affect students.

President — You are the commander-inchief of the Fanshawe Student Union. You are responsible for representing the students of Fanshawe to the college in several councils and committees, speaking on a wide range of issues that affect students. You are responsible for leading the Fanshawe Student Union in alignment with its mission and strategic directions. You chair the executive council and student council of the FSU, and deal with any issues that may come up from these meetings. You are the face of the FSU and are responsible for communicating with students and hearing their issues. Essentially, you are there to protect the interests of students and ensure that they are getting the best service possible from both the college and the FSU.

The descriptions above are just a basic overview of what's expected, but there are hardly any limits to what is possible and what can be achieved in these roles. I would encourage any motivated student out there to seriously consider running for these positions, and I don't just mean the young ones. I've heard a lot from mature students who feel they have very little representation at the table. This is your opportunity as well. It's a tremendous way to learn and develop new skills. You'll meet a ton of great people along the way. It's also a great way to help out your fellow students and create a lasting legacy in one of Ontario's best colleges.

Nominations open on Monday, January 24. Forms are available in SC2001, the FSU office. I'm available for any questions you may have, so don't hesitate to ask!
