Zoot: Fresh trends to look forward to in the New Year

With last year's unique trends and fashion mishaps now becoming a part of history, 2011 has some pretty exciting trends coming up. The New Year offers innovative men's suits, jeans and a twist on motorcycle fashion. But along with the fashion-forward trends come some trends that are not often worn by the general public, like eccentric bathing suits.

For men's suits this year, the main focus is on classicism and masculinity — in other words, taking styles from the past, applying them to the modern day male and accentuating their physiques. These suits incorporate elements from three different eras: the Victorian era, the 1930s and the 1960s. Taking the formality and sophistication of the Victorian era, the savoir faire of the '30s and the slim detailing from the '60s is what makes up the classicism element of the 2011 style suit. The masculine element of the New Year suit is basically defining the male physique, for example, by making the shoulders appear broader.

For the new cut of jean for men, it is time to say goodbye to the skinny jeans (that are unflattering nine times out of 10), and hello to bell-bottoms and flared jeans. Usually the women's trends come out first and then the men's clothing takes a different spin on them a while later, but with this trend, they came out at the same time. Men's bell-bottoms are less accentuated and are actually only slightly wider than a boot cut jean, but have a slimmer waist line which makes the hemline appear more defined.

The motorcycle fashion trend has been in style for women for quite a while but is just emerging into the men's wardrobe this year. It is a fairly simple trend with the main component being an intricately designed leather jacket, also known as a "statement jacket." This is what creates the outfit while the dark jeans and black boots are just what polish it off. While the women's trend uses a lot of different colour palettes, the men's rendition is strictly black.

Now with these fashion forward trends come some "interesting" designs that are definitely going to be double-takers and may not receive a positive response from the majority of society. The first unusual trend is the crop-top, which is a shirt that cuts off just before the belly button. While this might seem fitting for a male with great abs, the majority of the population would not fit into this category. The second, and probably the most unusual trend, is the monokini for men, which was originally designed for women and consists of only a bikini bottom. The third odd trend for 2011 is the "megging," also known as male leggings which would be worn underneath shorts. While these trends may seem way too far out of the box, they might just end up being the next revolutionary idea to men's clothing and could end up in your closet sooner than you know.
