Refresh Weekend #1 in the 2011
Pepsi Refresh Challenge.
This year, Pepsi is donating $2 million to charity in the Pepsi Refresh Challenge Canada. Every two months Pepsi gives away $200,000, which is broken down into four categories: $100,000 (one winner), $25,000 (two winners), $10,000 (three winners) and $5,000 (four winners). In order to be a winner of the challenge, you must receive the most votes in your category.
This month, PSSO has been accepted to participate in the $100,000 challenge to fulfill their dream to hold the first Parkinson's Family Refresh Weekend. This weekend will provide educational, spiritual, physical and wellness workshops and fun activities for families and caregivers in Southwestern Ontario. It will leave the whole family feeling rejuvenated and better equipped to deal with the challenges of Parkinson's.
Parkinson's is a chronic, progressive neurological disorder that affects nearly 100,000 Canadians. While the average age of onset is between 50 and 60 years of age, it is not unusual to see people under the age of 40 being diagnosed with Parkinson's.
When a person is diagnosed with Parkinson's, it not only affects that individual, it has an impact on the whole family. The person with Parkinson's is usually left with feelings of devastation and hopelessness. As Parkinson's progresses, a person's ability to communicate with others is greatly affected. This tends to make people feel isolated from their former social network. The caregivers and families then become the sole support system, which very often can leave them feeling burnt out. Programs like the Parkinson's Family Refresh Weekend are needed to support families.

Log on to the Pepsi Refresh Challenge Canada and sign up at www.refresheverything. ca/parkinsonsfamilyrefreshweekend. Once you create an account (which just requires an active email address), look under Health $100,000 and vote for "Provide a Parkinson's Family Getaway Refresh Weekend." Vote once a day, up until February 28 — it's that simple!
