The evening of February 16 marked the end of regular season action for the Falcons men's and women's volleyball teams. For some graduating Falcons, it would also mark their final regular season home games as Falcon athletes, and what an exciting evening it was inside a packed J-Gym.

In the first match of the doubleheader, the lady Falcons treated the hometown crowd to an absolute thriller against the visiting Mohawk Mountaineers. After a strong 25-15 opening set victory for the Falcons, the Mountaineers stormed back in the second set for a 25-20 victory, proving they were up to the Falcons' challenge. For the third set, the JGym crowd was once again treated to a douse of excitement as both teams battled it out on the hardwood for a nail-biting 25-23 set victory for the Falcons. The fourth set proved to be the real game-changer for the Mountaineers, as they were able to battle back after the Falcons had them on the ropes, winning the set in come-from-behind fashion, 25-21. In the fifth and final set, the Falcons were unable to slow down the Mountaineers' momentum, losing 15-12. Despite the loss, the Falcons were led by stand-out performances from Kaitlyn Kelly with 20 points and 15 digs, Katie Reist with 20 points and 14 digs and Aleksa Levnaich, who contributed 21 digs.

Following the marathon heartbreaker, Falcons head coach Lloyd Rumble was still pleased with his team's overall effort. "I thought they played really tough and hard and left it all out there."

Before the match, Fanshawe College honored graduating Falcons Justine Del Mundo, Vanessa Peprah, team captain Katie Reist, Megan Walls, Keely Armstrong and Stacie Thomas, as well as associate coach Amanda Batey.

"It's really tough as a coach because you spend a lot of time and energy, we really push student-athlete in both aspects, a lot of these kids are going to university and that's just a testament to the amount of time they've put into their school, and what they brought to our program," said Rumble, following the game.

In the second game of the Wednesday night double-header, the Falcon's men's team was up against a tough Mohawk Mountaineers team in town from Hamilton, Ontario. Prior to the opening set, Fanshawe College honored graduating members of the Falcon's volleyball program, including the man they call "Mr. Everything," Fanshawe College's VP of athletics Derek Howes, as well as his fellow seniors.

In a match that had the feel of a playoff atmosphere right from the opening serve, the Falcons and Mountaineers gave the J-Gym crowd a sneak peek of a possible provincial championship tournament match-up. In a three-set seesaw battle that saw Mr. Momentum swing back and forth between the two teams, the Falcons came out on the wrong end of a 25-21, 27-25, 25-19 rollercoaster ride of a match. Although losing in straight sets, to say the scoreboard was deceiving would be the understatement of the season as all three sets could have gone in either team's favour. Falcons Jordan Westman, Scott Brannigan and Shaun Petzke all contributed with 11 points, while Jordan McTavish added 10 digs during the evening.

Also making his presence felt in the match was Falcon rookie setter Mitch Berman. "It was a tough match. Mohawk came in with high energy, and came out firing and blocked really well, and I think they blocked us out of the game."

With the losses, the Fanshawe men wrap up an impressive 13-5 regular season, while the women head to the playoffs with an equally impressive 16-6 record on the season.
