We love B.A.L.L.S

Dear Editor:

Every Monday I awake with a sense of depression knowing that, once again, I have to endure five days of having to take two buses to school and sit there a total of 35 to 40 minutes to Fanshawe and back, listening to people's pointless conversations. The conversations on the bus can be intriguing, but that only happens once in a blue moon since the usual conversation goes something like, "Um, I am all out of money because I bought 100 bucks worth of alcohol and now I have no money for food. Like, what the hell?" I sit there, in complete torture, thinking to myself, "We consider ourselves an intelligent species?"

You may wonder as to what this has to do with B.A.L.L.S. The thing is, B.A.L.L.S is what gets me through the week. On Monday, I get to enjoy a three-hour class with my favourite writer, Tim Handleman! Then the rest of the week is spent anxiously waiting for the new edition of Interrobang so that when I obtain a copy, I flip through all of the old, cliche, everyday feel-good stories, filled with writers trying to see past these small imperfections, to finally (even refreshingly) reach a small taste of the other side. The column never loses its charm, no matter the subject. Whether it is Valentine's Day, a bus ride or fat people at the mall, Handelman's thoughts will always get your brain fired up! After all, has anyone figured out if we are the gym bag on the bus?

So as I was enjoying my weekly read, I noticed a troubling letter titled Time to bounce B.A.L.L.S. Apparently this person was not madly in love with Handelman as I must admit I am ... or he likes Justin Bieber. Dean Greco, the writer responsible for this madness, stated that he had enough with the negativity brought to the table by Handelman's weekly column and went on to compare Handelman to the sun. So I say this, the hypocrisy of Greco's statements violently burst out with each and every word. Instead of pointing out Handelman's flaws politely and offering up solutions to better his column, he ends up "bitching" about "bitching."

The point is, I do not see how Handelman is failing to benefit humanity since he is the reason I have started contemplating issues such as a clean planet. Handelman points out the flaws that no one else will and tries to encourage the fight for what is right, kind of like Batman. He shows us the sides of humanity that everyone would rather ignore and instead of praising Handleman's genius, Greco asks us to be happy, just like Bob Marley, while completely ignoring things such as the genocide in Libya or Justin Bieber. So I say this to Dean Greco, in his own words, "I reckon a little more of positivity and a lot less bitching would bring us a little closer to bettering humanity."
