Room in Rome (2010)

While we are living in an age of amazing visual advances in the realm of cinema, with the resurgence in 3D technology providing some breathtaking visuals, sometimes all you need is one room, two people, and some conversation. That is what you get in Room in Rome, a film about two young women who share a night of passion in a Rome hotel room.

As the film begins, two young women are heading back to a hotel after sharing a few drinks at a bar. Elena Anaya plays Alba, who is Spanish and a lesbian, while Natasha Yarovenko stars as Natasha, a Russian who has never been with a woman before. That changes after a little seduction by Alba. From there, the two women must decide how to proceed with their lives — should they try to make it work together, or go back to living the lives they were before this chance meeting?

At first the women hide their true identities, but as the film goes along, the characters are uncovered, both figuratively and literally (more on that later). We learn that both women have been through tragedies in their lives, and are uncertain about what lies ahead of them. In between romps in the bed, bath and shower, Alba and Elena must still deal with emotional pain they are suffering, while trying to sort out these burgeoning feelings for one another.

It is not difficult to understand why Room in Rome was not given consideration in this year's Best Costume Design category at the Academy Awards. The reason being that there is very little clothing worn by either Elena Anaya or Natasha Yarovenko. There is more nudity in this film than at a Super Bowl party at the Charlie Sheen mansion. So if that makes you uncomfortable, you may want to steer clear of Room in Rome. I myself am not against naked women — not as often as I would like to be, anyways. While the women are nude the majority of the film, it never is presented in a dirty or salacious way.

Room in Rome is a very dialogue heavy movie. If you do not have a great attention span for movies that don't feature big explosions every two minutes, you might want to skip it. However, it you are looking for a film with a lot of emotion and plenty of character development, then I certainly recommend Room in Rome to you. Or if you just like beautiful naked women, then by golly, you'll get a kick out of this one too.

Room in Rome was released March 1 on DVD.
