Animal rights activists in British Columbia are condemning the University of British Columbia for building a new research centre at their Okanagan campus. Animal rights group Stop UBC Animal Research is accusing the university of keeping them in the dark about the new facility, and state that too much of Canada's animal research is being done in secret. In their opinion, all Canadian research projects involving animals should be documented in detail on a website.

Native Canadian Mohawk communities in Ontario and Quebec say they are prepared to do whatever it takes to prevent the shipment of nuclear waste through the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River. Earlier this year, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission approved Bruce Power's request to ship 16 decommissioned nuclear steam generators to Sweden for recycling. The Canadian Environmental Law Association is also criticizing the CNSC's decision, saying that a full environmental assessment should be conducted before a license to transport is issued.

Montreal Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty suffered a broken vertebra and severe concussion after an NHL game against the Boston Bruins on March 8. Pacioretty's head hit the partition between the two player benches after taking a hit from Bruins defenceman Zdeno Chara.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS
Seven children, aged seven months to 11 years, died in a farmhouse fire in rural Pennsylvania. Both parents and one child survived. At the time of the fire, the mother was milking cows and the father was napping in his milk delivery truck. Their three-year-old child ran to the barn to alert the mother that there was smoke in the house. After the mother ran to a neighbour to alert emergency services, they returned to find the house engulfed in flames. All the deaths were caused by smoke inhalation.

French police recovered $25 million (USD) worth of jewelry from a rain sewer in Paris. The jewelry was from the 2008 robbery of a Harry Winston store, when four robbers stole $111 million (USD) worth of goods. In 2009, half the jewelry was found and nine suspects were charged. Police have not yet said whether or not this is the last of the stolen jewelry or if more remains missing.

Los Angeles-based DJ Adam V. added a new feature to his blog, Born This Way (bornthisway.blogspot.com). The site now posts pictures submitted by homosexuals from when they were children, showing that being gay is something you are born with. He hopes his blog will go hand-in-hand with other projects such as It Gets Better to stop gay bullying and prevent further suicides of gay teens that have become so frequent in America.
