I remember as a younger girl my mom would always try to enforce one rule. Surprisingly, for a woman who doesn't follow fashion extensively, there was one fashion rule she always implemented. Whenever I went to a semi-formal, graduation or party, she would always try to have me fish into my closet to wear something I already had. I would always argue about how I can't possibly wear something already in my closet because, well ... it's just not right.

I feel as though this might be something all people go through at one time or another: that dreaded feeling of opening the doors to our closet, looking through the rack or neatly folded piles of clothing and realizing that … oh my gosh, there's just nothing in there that'll do.

The feeling of a new garment is something special between the person who wears it and the piece of clothing or accessory. It may sound silly, but if we take a look at the act of shopping, what is it that makes it so great? It's the thrill of finding something new and feeling special, feeling thinner, feeling more tan, feeling that feeling that you need to experience at that moment to be more comfortable and secure in yourself.

It's therapy, a shrink; whatever you want to call it, it's true. It's beauty, it's a thing that we have and we can control. Fashion is something in the air, it's in the streets, it's the way a little boy mismatches his rain boots to his Superman t-shirt. It's the guy at the gym who thinks he's buff and matches his watch to his shoes and his shorts. It's that perfectly stylish businesswoman who looks like she spent hours getting dressed, but really she just woke up.

Fashion is all the little things that make up the world.

It would be difficult to continue this article and describe the beauty of fashion because it truly is something that needs to be observed and not read, therefore I will return to my original purpose.

Winter is almost over. Soon, flowers will be in bloom and the smell of green grass will be in the air. Fresh flowers cultivated from gardens will be sitting in kitchens and people will be enjoying their backyards with neighbours. But what about winter? What is it that draws us to THIS season, what's so attractive about it?

If you ask me, I think it's the glorious outerwear and the fact that the season starts with September, the January of the fashion calendar. What I think is special about this season, which is almost finished, is that the pieces that we purchase now can easily be translated into spring and summer 2011.

Do your mothers a favour; don't put your winter clothes in the back of your closet. Take a look at what you've got and appreciate it. Try searching for that feeling that made it all seem so special the first time.

Whether it was the horizontal lines that made you slimmer or the colour of the sequins that brought attention to your eyes, there was something that attracted you the first time.

If worse comes to worst and you must leave your clothing at the back of your closet, stop and take a minute to think. There's somebody out there who would love the clothes you aren't wearing, someone in need who could benefit. Don't be selfish, because if we all only thought about ourselves, we'd all get nowhere.

Sharing is love and so is fashion, so spread the love and the fashion.
