Alison's essential summer reading

Every summer, book lovers relish the extra time allowed to them to explore the vast world of literature. I have compiled a list of my favorite books that I revisit summer after summer, so if you're looking for something new and interesting, there is sure to be something to suit your fancy!

Fiction

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
by Stieg Larsson
From the late Swedish author Stieg Larsson comes the first in his Millennium trilogy of novels. Science Fiction

Frankenstein

Touted as the first science fiction novel, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is a must-read for any sci-fi lover. Victor Frankenstein is a scientist who, after many years of obsessing over creating life, constructs and brings to life a repulsive monster that Victor ultimately abandons in a forest. Angry and afraid, the monster terrorizes Victor's family and Victor is forced to return home to attempt to destroy that which he created.

Horror

The Shining
by Stephen King
The Torrance family, made up of Daddy Jack, Mommy Wendy and young son Danny, decide to spend a winter isolated from everyone when Jack accepts a winter caretaker job at the mountaintop Overlook Hotel, which becomes utterly inaccessible once the snow falls. Facing isolation, Jack becomes haunted by his own demons, those of past alcoholism and abuse, and he also must fight the demons that already reside within the Overlook. Ghosts, loneliness and desperation turn the Torrance family against one another, and they must fight themselves, the hotel and the elements to survive.
