Fanshawe scores top marks with international students

Fanshawe College President Dr. Howard Rundle has much to be proud of. Among the many tools available to Fanshawe to aid in charting and benchmarking its achievements as an educational institution was a survey of international students. This survey ranked Fanshawe against schools around the world in various aspects of the educational experience. When the results of this survey were revealed, it was a proud moment for Fanshawe.

Fanshawe belongs to an international organization called i-graduate, an independent company that provides benchmarking and consulting services to universities and colleges that choose to participate.

Given that the process of attracting and satisfying international students is highly competitive, the results that Fanshawe received in the international student surveys were "incredible," according to Rundle. "For the first time, six Ontario colleges agreed to be part of this process. It included Fanshawe and nearby Niagara College. Worldwide they had 42 vocational institutions, and 203 institutions in total," explained Rundle.

When asked about the overall experience of Fanshawe, the students surveyed ranked Fanshawe the highest of all the vocational institutions and second-highest of all 203 institutions involved. Additionally, Fanshawe rated "number one in terms of English, whether it was ESL or English taught by our languages school, number one in terms of learning assessment, learning support and marking criteria," explained Rundle. He went on to reveal that Fanshawe had rated number one in the categories of performance feedback, career advice, clubs and societies, student union and financial services.

According to Rundle, "Attracting international students is one of a number of key components to our educational strategy. It is an internationally competitive thing as we're not just competing with other colleges and universities in Ontario or even Canada, we're competing with universities and colleges in Australia, Japan and the US, who are all attracting international students."

Fanshawe currently enrolls over 800 international students each year, and with the spectacular results of this survey, the international prestige and enrollment is certain to grow in the coming years.
