New faces in the FSU dining establishments

The new school year has brought about some staffing changes in the Fanshawe Student Union, with Gary Deline as the Out Back Shack's new Manager and Ismael Viegas in the newly revived Hospitality Services Manager position.

As Manager of the OBS, Deline is responsible for the daily operations of the restaurant and ensuring the staff provides proper service for its guests. "We want to provide an environment where our students can relax and feel comfortable," he said.

Deline is no stranger to the OBS — he worked there while attending Fanshawe for Hotel Restaurant Management. During his time at Fanshawe, Deline also worked at the Heliotrope (now a cooking lab) and completed a co-op at Olive Oyle's. He has also worked in a number of restaurants around town, including TJ Baxters, Moxie's and Gigs Grillhouse.

Deline said he is "very excited" to be working at the OBS. "This is an incredible opportunity for me to advance my personal growth."

With seven years' experience in the position at McMaster University, as well as experience working in a similar position at Ryerson University, Viegas is bringing a ton of knowledge to his job as Hospitality Services Manager.

Viegas will oversee operations at the Out Back Shack and Oasis, and one of his goals is to revamp the FSU's catering department. "We want to expand what we have to offer," he said. Viegas said he will focus on the growth of the service, and will work with Brian Harness, FSU Food Service Director, on the menu. "Most importantly, we want to get it out there — let people know that we offer these services."

Both Viegas and Deline began working at the FSU in August, coming into a situation where almost all the staff positions were free. "It goes from zero to 100 in one day in September (when school starts)," Viegas said. "We want to make sure both areas are serving students with good food, great prices, a fun and safe environment to be in — that should be the goal of anybody who works in a student union."
