OCAA suspends varsity sports events due to strike

If you've walked through the Athletics Department in the past few days, you may have noticed its normally vibrant welcome desk shuttered and silent.

"Athletics is closed, but we are here to support the students as best we can with what we have to work with, " said Eric Collins, Athletic Officer for the Fanshawe College Athletics Department.

The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association, the organization responsible for 16 league and tournament championships provincewide, announced on September 6 that it will not conduct any varsity sports events during the support staff strike.

As of September 8, the OCAA began the process of postponing regular season games in its league sports.

On campus, Athletics is "operating all tryouts as normal," and the plan is to hold practices as normal as well, said Collins. "We're focusing on the tryouts that are operating, and supporting the parttime coaching staff throughout the tryout process."

Athletics is also currently accepting applications for intramural teams. If you have any questions, Collins advised contacting the sport-specific coaches.
