Women's basketball start season strong

The Fanshawe Falcons women's basketball team has started their season strong and hope it continues through the rest of the season.

"We fell short of our goal last year and hoping to improve with our squad this year," said Kaitlind Dutrizac, fifth-year player for the Falcons. "We have a lot of rookies; big, athletic girls; and fast, talented guards — all that have played club ball — so I feel we will have a strong team for this year's season."

Coach Larry Little had the same opinion of the team this year. "We have a lot of new faces this year; with six girls returning out of 14 from last season, there's lots of new talent this year."

With this new talent comes a lot of hard work, and the women are more than ready, practicing morning and night, conditioning and practicing defence to work out all the kinks.

The girls were tested in their first game of the season, playing last year's first-place team. "We played strong, we kept it close and with our new squad only ended up losing by six points — a strong start for the season," said Little.

With all the new faces on the team and injuries the team is facing, it's going to be a season of work, he continued. "We practice a lot of conditioning and defence, and with all the injuries plaguing the team off the start, we are going to have our work cut out for us," but, he added, the team and coaches are determined to win and improve on last year's season.

"We are practicing hard for this season, and as a team we know we can improve on last year," said Detrizac. This year's team is looking determined and ready for the long season ahead of them.
