Love, Lust and Lies: Smart = sexy

It's true that good-looking people have an easier time getting a date, but looks can only get you so far. The older you get, the more you see girls going after the nerdy/geeky guy instead of the "hot guy." I am not going to pretend that girls all go for the smart guy; usually we fall for the stereotypical jacked guy who cares more about working out than he does about anyone else, but we all have our weak moments in life. Don't be fooled by the girls who chase the wrong guy, because there are still the kind of girls that end up with the right ones, you just haven't found one of them yet.

The problem is that women aren't always attracted to geeky types in the beginning, so it can be discouraging for some guys to pursue a woman. Yes, maybe at first you will have to work a bit harder than someone else, so what? We all have things that we find difficult that don't come easily to us, but that doesn't mean we just give up or stop trying.

The good thing is you know when someone likes you, it's more than just because the way you look; they like you for you. I know girls who have dated guys they weren't originally attracted to, but they were drawn to them because of their intelligence and then the more they got to know the guys, the more they became captivated by them. I'm not saying that geeks are physically unappealing, because that's not true, I'm just saying it's a common observation that once you get to know a person, the more physically attracted you become to them.

It's the same for someone with an ugly personality: the more you get to know them, the less attracted to them you become. The two guys I have liked the most through my years and years of dating were the ones who were incredibly smart and kind geeks. I just found they were generally more interesting and had more to offer than all the other guys I dated.

So here are a few reasons why some girls find intelligence sexy:

1. More to talk about: Have you ever gone on a date with someone that you thought was good-looking, but when it came to having a conversation with them, you realized they didn't have much more to offer than a good time? Girls want to be able to have a conversation with someone they are dating and not just about what happened on Jersey Shore the night before. Let's be honest for a minute: if you are a smart guy and on a date a girl wasn't interested in having a stimulating conversation and all she did was talk about television shows, would you even want to date her? Probably not, so why would a girl want to date a guy like that either?

2. Goal-oriented: Girls like it when a guy has his life together and knows what he wants. They become attracted to his motivation and drive to succeed, and geeks usually fit this category. Nothing is more unattractive than a guy who does nothing with his life and has no goals or ambition. A man who is able to think and support himself is the kind of guy a woman wants to date. You know that song by TLC, "No Scrubs"? It's about guys who think that they are amazing but do nothing but sit on their broke asses all day and talk about things they want instead of going out and getting what they want. Girls don't want to date a scrub — these guys may think that they can get girls because they are goodlooking, but they are lazy and have nothing to offer in a relationship. Smart guys go after what they want, and that's hot.

3. Able to learn from each other: Everyone is intelligent in their own way; not every person knows the same thing or thinks the same way. They think for themselves and have a desire to learn — that's what makes them smart. Girls with an aspiration to learn are attracted to guys with that same enthusiasm. My friend and her boyfriend are the perfect example: both are very intelligent people but in very different ways. My friend graduated with a Physiology degree and is now in nursing, but she wouldn't be able to tell you the difference between left- and right-wing politics. Her boyfriend, on the other hand, graduated with a Political Science degree and doesn't understand chemical reactions. They may not always think the same or have the same interests, but they learn from each other, and both enjoy learning new things and it keeps their relationship interesting.

Maybe you won't always get the girl that you want, but if she can't see how amazing you are and appreciate the geek in you, then she never really deserved you anyway. I know that sounds like a line, but that's the truth.
