Around the OHL: Hishon's foolish pride

For those who aren't aware, the London Knights picked up Joey Hishon after Owen Sound released him about two weeks ago.

Another fact to note: Joey Hishon has not played a game all season due to a concussion suffered in last year's Memorial Cup against the Kootenay Ice in round-robin gameplay.

The London Knights and Owen Sound Attack have developed a strong dislike for each other since last year's first round of playoffs— if you don't recall, an Owen Sound player speared London Knights' Captain Stephen Sanza.

Who was that Owen Sound player?

Joey Hishon.

The Attack and Knights had a good rivalry at the start of the 2011 OHL playoffs, and it seems as though the Hishon-Sanza incident is the spark that set fire to the hate between the two teams that still stands to this date.

All this drama on the ice could only lead to drama off the ice. It all started about two weeks ago with the Attack releasing Hishon and the Knights putting him on their protection list. That is significant enough but Hishon added fuel to the fire by Tweeting "@AttackOHL I'm an attacker.. Not a knight.. Just wanted to make that clear ! Thanks for everything you guys have done for me. #goattackgo". No doubt that it is a bold statement to refuse to accept that he is London property, it goes just a little further to a little thing I like to call 'foolish pride.' Someone asked him through Twitter why he wouldn't want to play for arguably the best franchise in the CHL. Hishon replied directly back: "If u ever played for an organization like OS or were a part of the community you would understand".

We are back to Joey Hishon's foolish pride; don't get me wrong, it's great to have pride for the team that drafted you and developed you into a skilled player, but Owen Sound released the prideful Hishon to make way for a healthy player; basically the team gave up on him getting healthy and back into the line-up, and instead of keeping him as a cheerleader on the team, they released him for someone else.

The Owen Sound Attack has respectfully moved on from Joey Hishon, but Hishon has not moved on from the Owen Sound Attack. He has the potential to be on another championship team if he gets healthy, although even if the unlikely happens and Hishon does recover this season; I doubt the Colorado Avalanche will let him play another game in the OHL due to the fact that the Avalanche drafted him as a firstround pick and have him listed as a top prospect.
