Riot may deter prospective students
Dear Editor:
I'm writing this email because a friend affiliated with Fanshawe College suggested I do so. Up until now, I have seriously been considering Fanshawe as my primary college of choice for future studies. The media programs and the overall student community attracted my eyes to the school, however, I do not want to be part of a community that takes part in drunken riots, burning valuable objects, and even setting vehicles aflame.
I am hoping that this letter reaches the people involved and affected, because I have been completely disgusted with not only recent, but past issues that continue to happen. Maybe this will get tossed aside as something that has already been discovered, but I hope not. It is not action against the students I hope to accomplish with this letter, I want the entire Fanshawe population to be aware that if an outside prospective student has second thoughts about applying due to these incidents, how many others have those second thoughts as well?
It would be my hope that if students were aware about the effect their actions have on the outside world, they would be less likely to take part in these events.
To the students who celebrated St. Patrick's respectfully and safely — and I'm sure there are many — be proud of yourselves. To those who took part in the appalling events of this year's St. Patrick's Day celebrations, you should be ashamed of yourselves. You're trashing the reputation of a good school and potentially throwing your futures away. You're at Fanshawe College to make a future for yourself, not to possibly be arrested and find yourself in jail. If you have a criminal record, it's not going to matter what type of degree, diploma or certificate you have.
The fact that the London Police Chief had to make a news conference to put the city at ease because of the actions of students is saddening, and it is very unfortunate that events like this influence future students' decisions on which schools to apply to. Hopefully there is a proactive response to these events, and I for one hope to see a change in this student party mentality.
After all that I have heard, I'm not so sure Fanshawe is the right choice anymore, and I hope that current student awareness of possible students not looking at Fanshawe because of these situations is enough to make them change their behavior when celebrating holidays.
