Student Union gears up to go green
The Fanshawe Student Union is getting ready for green week, and this year they're starting early.
“Usually we do our Environmental Awareness Week during the first week of April. This year we decided that we were going to do a pre-event to get some more marketing and awareness going,” said Jason Yeoman, the FSU's VP Internal and organizer of the event.
“Environmental awareness is definitely not a one-week thing. We decided to make it a two-week thing this year because we really wanted to promote how important waste diversion was on campus, but we also want to spread the message that this is a year-round problem we want to start addressing a little more often,” he said. “This week we're definitely trying to draw some more awareness and attention to waste diversion on campus because it's a very serious issue.”
This week, watch out for Recycle Referees roaming the Oasis and Forwell Hall as part of the You've Got Flagged campaign. “We're going to have Recycle Referees out all this week actually handing out flags and pens to everyone who's littering or not recycling properly ... They will whistle you down, hand you a flag and give you more information on what you can do to divert waste at Fanshawe,” said Yeoman.
“We're doing a bit more this year to punish the litterers and to reward the recyclers,” he joked.
To go green on campus, make use of the water bottle refilling stations, and ensure you're putting waste where it belongs: in the appropriate recycling bin (for paper or plastic), in the composting bin (for food waste), in the special bins for Tim Hortons cups, or in the garbage. “We really want to encourage people to take advantage of all those methods to divert some of the waste at Fanshawe,” said Yeoman.
Next week is the FSU's annual Environmental Awareness Week, and Yeoman has big plans for environmentally friendly fun.
The Get Caught Recycling campaign will take place once again this year. Everybody who is caught recycling on campus during Environmental Awareness Week will get a ballot and will be entered in a draw to win a new bike.
The annual campus cleanup will be taking place on April 2, with participants meeting at 5 p.m. in the Oasis. “We're going to be giving everybody garbage bags and gloves and sticks to go clean up the campus,” said Yeoman. “You will be rewarded with a full pizza dinner afterwards.”
April 4 will see the Let's Make A Deal nooner in Forwell with the biggest-ever prizes given away: six cases of Rockstar energy drink, a new longboard, gift certificates and other prizes. Altogether, at least $500 worth of prizes will be given away.
