Volunteering on campus

This week is the volunteer fair, which means you should probably be thinking about doing some volunteering. We understand that you might not have the time (or willpower, for that matter) to drag yourself down to a food bank, a hospital or a nursing home, so how about helping out on campus?

Fanshawe has plenty of opportunities for students to get involved in volunteer activities. "I'm working closely with (administrative services manager) Carol Balzer in designing a volunteer involvement form for the Fanshawe Student Union," mentioned Tory Holmes, VP of Internal Affairs. The form would allow students to help out with FSU; run special events like movie nights, comedy shows and new music nights.

The volunteer campaign is "designed to involve students directly by volunteering with FSU events and related activities. It is a new approach to letting students become more involved with the FSU," said Holmes.

The initiative has been set up and running since September, but Holmes said he expects there will be extra campaigning at the volunteer fair.

Getting involved with the FSU is easy. Just stop by the Student Union office in SC2001 or send Holmes an email at fsuinternal@fanshawec.ca to ask for information.

While the FSU has a lot of one-time, event-based volunteer opportunities, there are other ways to get involved around campus on a more regular basis. Try checking out the Sharing Shop in B1050, a volunteer-run clothing and food donation centre for Fanshawe students. Contact Janet Ostrom at jostrom@fanshawec.ca for information on how to get set up with the Sharing Shop.

International Student Services is always looking for volunteers in their International Society group. The group hosts potlucks, conversation circles and group trips to places like New York and Niagara Falls. "It's always nice to see domestic (Canadian) students getting involved with the International Society," international student advisor Kim Rowe said, adding, "Without the opportunity to socialize with other English-speaking students, they tend to group together. Programs like the conversation circles help the international students mingle."

If you're interested in taking part in International Services activities, contact Rowe at krowe@fanshawec.ca or stop by the office located in E2025.

Sharing your time and hard work around campus isn't just great for the people you're working with and helping, there are also a lot of benefits for you. "It's a social environment. You meet a lot of cool people along the way and make friends. It's a really rewarding experience because you get to participate in events that you normally wouldn't," Holmes mentioned.

Whether you're looking for a one-time opportunity with the FSU or a regular volunteer job, Fanshawe has some ways for students to get involved right here on campus.

Stop by the FSU office in SC2001 for more info on the Student Union's volunteer program. For more general information on Fanshawe's volunteer opportunities, stop by Career Services in D1063. They should also be able to point you in the right direction for off-campus volunteer work.
