Nothing bland about White Paint

Juno-nominated band Hollerado is back with their second full-length album White Paint, which will be released on February 26. Their first full-length album, Record In a Bag, snagged them a Juno nomination in 2011, and their most recent release is an indie/alternative rock fan's dream.

Lead singer and guitarist Menno Versteeg, lead guitarist Nixon Boyd, bassist Dean Baxter, and drummer Jake Boyd form the Ottawa-based band. They've had a great run these past couple years as they've toured alongside well-known bands and artists such as The Flaming Lips, Weezer and Jack White's The Dead Weather.

Hollerado's new album starts off with the song "Wonder, Velocity, Charlie and Me More." It comes across as more of a short introduction to track two, "Don't Think," as the lyrics are just words and phrases that rhyme with each other mixed in with some musical babble. "Don't Think" really sets up the tone for the album's indie guitar-led alternative rock feel.

Some of the tracks that stand out the most to me are "Desire 126," which is also, in my opinion, the most lyrically strong of all the 11 tracks. "I Want My Medicine" is a catchy tune, especially near the last chorus and verse. "Pure Emotion" is an equally catchy song as the drums and background vocals really take the spotlight. I caught myself tapping my finger along to it on my desk while subconsciously singing the background "oooooooh la la"s.

Hollerado's first single off the album, "Pick Me Up." ends the album on an upbeat note with an interesting electronic-fueled breakdown at the end. The song "Lonesome George" felt out of place to me at first but as it went on it grew on me. It is beautiful dream like acoustic piece that picks up steam midway through.

The songs "Too Much To Handle", "So It Goes" and "Thanks For the Venom" are the three songs that didn't stand out much to me, but they are definitely worth a listen. An honorable mention goes to the song "Fresno Chunk (Digging With You)."

I have nothing negative to say about White Paint except that I wish it was longer... but I guess that's what the replay button is for.

Overall the album is a great achievement for the band and is worth the wait. This spring you can see Hollerado live in concert as they are touring with Billy Talent and Sum 41. They're coming to Budweiser Gardens in London on April 3 along with Indian Handcrafts, Sum 41 and Billy Talent — check out tinyurl.com/hollerado-april2013 for more details on that show.
