Fun and Fitness: Summertime fun at Fanshawe

It's June and it's officially getting HOT! The recent 14th annual Gus Macker three on three basketball tournament has already passed by. It's one of Victoria Park's staple events as it brings in thousands of competitors from around the South Western Ontario Region, including Michigan. During the tourney the mercury reached a high of 30 degrees Celsius, which only fueled the fire of the competitive atmosphere. If you didn't get a chance to play this year, you missed an excellent opportunity for a weekend full of grueling exercise and tanning (or burning, depending on how the sun treated you). Or is there another chance?

You bet. That chance is in the form of the ‘NBA Hoop It Up' tournament. This three on three tournament takes place on June 24-25 weekend and will be hosted at the Western Fair grounds. The categories range from beginner to advanced to ensure anyone can participate. You're guaranteed three games and a weekend of fun in the sun, so it's definitely something that may be worth your while. Other events such as the ‘Labatt 24 Hour Relay' will also be taking place in the month of June (10-11). This event provides an opportunity to run several kilometers as a team, raise money for London Hospitals and meet lots of interesting new people. You might be saying to yourself “That's great but what does Fanshawe have to offer for those poor souls who are stuck here during the summer semester”? As dead as it may seem around here, there's probably more available than you would think.

The J building provides you with opportunities for all your fitness needs. Student memberships are running at $102.72 for the remaining three months of the summer semester. As most of us know by now, summer at Fanshawe leaves us with a peaceful and quiet environment. This enables the Fitness Centre to be less congested which in turn appeals to those looking to avoid crowds and wait times for machines. The three gymnasiums are open for the most part for students looking to play indoor sports. We also have three squash courts to accommodate all racket enthusiasts. Bring your rackets and hop on for a 45 minute session in between classes. Hell, we even have ping pong tables on the second floor to keep you entertained. Lest we forget the Summer Intramural Program which consists of several sports (see Athletics Department for details).

So, you, the Fanshawe students, have been brought up to date on just a few of the services we offer. Come for a walk to the J block and see what sparks your interest. For those of you who are beginners in any of the activities I've mentioned, now's your chance to get involved. You get the luxury of learning and practicing without having the standard fall semester crowd discouraging your efforts. So get over here and start taking advantage!
