Rain or shine, Shinerama brings a crowd

For over four decades college and university students from around the country have shined shoes, washed cars, danced, sang and begged in the name of cystic fibrosis.

Shinerama 2006 on Saturday, September 9 was no exception. Over 130 Fanshawe students and volunteers braved the rainy forecast and hit the streets looking for donations.

“The day went really well,” said FSU VP Internal and Shinerama organizer John-Paul Renzella. “I was surprised that so many people came out when it was supposed to rain.”

Even with competition from Western across the street, the Fanshawe car wash at Dave Collver Auto Garage was a huge draw for donators.

Donations from businesses like Canadian Tire, Zellers, Tim Hortons, Mr. Sub and Coca-Cola were exchanged for donations by passers by. Renzella said volunteers were also giving the Shinerama t-shirts in return for a generous donation.

Two chartered buses took Fanshawe Shinerama volunteers to Argyle Mall, White Oaks and Masonville Malls, as well as Northland Mall to gather funds. A group of international students also ventured downtown to Laser Quest.

“My goal with Shinerama this year was not to just raise money. My focus was also on the kids who were volunteering, said Renzella, who was impressed by the commitment from the volunteers this year. “They wanted to come out, make friends and help out a very good cause.”

One lucky participant actually profited from volunteering. First-year student Kelly Lapointe won a trip for two to Montreal for News Years Eve, courtesy of Breakaway Tours.

Renzella said he couldn't have made it through the day without the help from Candice, Alex, Jana, Shawna, Brittany, Kaleigh, Carla, Meredith, Melissa, Christine and the FSU executives, specifically that of Travis Mazereeuw, who single handedly sold an entire bucket of candy at the Shinerama Pub at the Shack.
