Musical Ramblings: ‘Burglar metal' at its best

Rumpelstiltskin Grinder — Buried in the Front Yard

I heard these guys on a sample a few months ago but never found their disc around here until late July. Imagine the happiness that came over me when I found this. I almost cried in the store because on the CD case, there was a sticker that describes the band as “extreme burglar metal!”

What is “burglar metal” you ask? Well, I guess this question can only be answered by listening to Rumpelstiltskin Grinder.

The CD kicks off hard with “Stealing E.T.,” which is about what the title suggests. Lyrics in this song are “E.T.'s pissed! Don't look up to the sky. Something is not right.” I mean, “E.T.'s pissed?” This is too funny.

The laughs continue because although the music is wicked and in your face, the song titles and the lyrical content all seem to be tongue-in-cheek. Song titles such as, “The Day Merman met Todd ‘the Harpoon' Wilson” and “Unleash the Troll” tell you something about the attitude of this band. Hell, even the cover, which portrays some weird looking troll and inside art that has the band playing football and basketball with body parts is just so amusing.

The musical talent is top notch on this disc, as well. These guys can play circles around those whiny emo bands that are flooding the popular music market. Every single song has a part that will have you banging your head or playing air guitar and that's rare on a metal CD today.

If you don't mind the silly lyrics and the humor, you'll find one metal CD that you easily play from the beginning to the end and then restart it. This CD is that good and I really can't wait to see where these guys will go next. I give this one 9.5 out of 10 just because I know they'll probably be able to top this awesome release. Buy it!
