Musical Ramblings: “Yeah!”, Def Leppard is back

Def Leppard — “Yeah!”
I don't know if I'm showing my age by starting my article like this, but when Def Leppard's “Hysteria” album (yes, album) came out in the late 80s, I was in grade five or so and I was simply floored. Catchy tunes that linger in pop culture today like “Women,” “Animal,” and the commercially successful, “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” still have me spinning this release at least once a month. Unfortunately, their latter stuff just lost me and I found myself enjoying their earlier releases more. When I got a free copy of this sent to me, I thought, “What the hell” and gave it a spin.

“Yeah!” is collection of covers done by Def Leppard, which pays tribute to the bands that they grew up listening to. If you are too young to remember “Hysteria” (or weren't even born yet) odds are you won't find anything worth listening to on this disc. Hell, I don't even know most of the originals or the bands they pay tribute to on this disc.

Covered artists on this disc include: The Faces' "Stay With Me," Badfinger's "No Matter What," T Rex's "20th Century Boy, " David Essex's "Rock On,” Blondie's "Hanging on the Telephone," John Kongos's "He's Gonna Step On You Again," and “Sweet's "Hell Raiser.”

I really don't understand why this band that hasn't released a studio album in a while, and more importantly why they would waste creative time and release this album. This is definitely not my cup of tea, but the production and the delivery of the song are very well done. Not to mention that fact that Joe Elliot sounds as young as he was when he sang on “Pyromania” and “Hysteria.”

If you're a fan of the aforementioned bands and want to hear Def Leppard's take on these classics, I'm sure you'll find something to like on this disc. Next week: a double dose of wicked death metal goodness to make up for this boring covers album.

FYI — Peter is currently spinning Deadsy's “Phantasmagore,” Gojira's “From Mars to Sirius” and Gwars “Beyond Hell.” Reviews coming soon so hang in there, metal fans!
