Pocket Mortys: A clone to rival all clones

Everyone's favourite show, Rick and Morty, has now been made into a game you can play on your phone, but beware it is addicting.

You step out of a green portal and immediately the blast of humid jungle air hits your face; you are in an alien world. To your left and right grows a lush pink forest, all vaguely cuboidal. Though, in front of you sits a monstrosity. The creature wants to fight, but not with fists. Instead, they point towards clones of your grandson.

This is Pocket Mortys.

Ever since the ridiculously popular Adult Swim cartoon Rick and Morty premiered back in 2013, fans have asked for more. Adult Swim and Big Pixel Studios just fulfilled that wish, in a decent free-to-play game for the Android and iOS.

In Pocket Mortys, you can catch Mortys of all shapes and sizes, using them to fight friends and foes alike, as well as a band of leaders intent on stopping you at all costs; all of this while fusing your own weak Mortys into stronger, more evolved versions.

Sound familiar; as in, the 20 year-old-hit phenomenon Pokémon familiar?

Well, the hit cartoon is no stranger to ripping pop culture, throwing up on it and jacking it full of super science steroids. The show’s a bit intense, but that’s usually a good thing.

But back to Pocket Mortys. You play as Rick, a drunken super scientist, who is getting into trans-dimensional shenanigans with his less-than-genius grandson Morty. While making a new invention, another Rick drops through an inter- dimensional portal and starts a fight with you using his Morty.

Following the Rick back through his portal after defeating him, you’re brought to the Council of Ricks, a world where Ricks control every aspect of life.

The Council deems you unfit for travel between dimensions and has your own portal gun, capable of making a dimensional gateway back home, confiscated.

Then begins the grind to get badges to be able to fight all six Council of Ricks.

For now, that’s about it to the game. There are currently 82 different types of Mortys to catch and train, while each one is typed based on the rock-paper-scissors system. The developers have already stated more Mortys will be added to catch and train, as well as more side quests. So even if you beat the game in a day or two, be prepared for more in the near future.

The biggest downside to the game is the crafting system. It allows you to make your own healing items and Morty Manipulation Chips capable of catching Mortys.

The interface is slow and there’s currently no way to make multiples of an item. After a couple hours of playing, it’s almost worth it just to buy the items you need anyway, as there’s a shop built right into the home menu.

But, it does feel like you’re actually experimenting, so the crafting system at least makes sense to the world, but maybe not to the player’s patience.

Ultimately, Pocket Morty’s is a great game; only once did I want to buy the in-game money called Blips and Chitz coupons, trying to get the rare Cronenberg Morty. With time and a few updates, Pocket Mortys could really turn into a great 15- hour play-through game. For now though, it’s time to get Riggity-Riggity wrecked!

PROS

• Relatively easy controls

• The ability to save your game to a cloud system, meaning you won’t lose any possible real money spent trying to get any of the exclusive Mortys

• So many different Mortys

CONS

• If you’re easily offended, this game isn’t for you; remember it comes from Adult Swim

• The crafting system is a mess, taking too long with no easy way to make duplicates

• Needs more battle graphics
