Role reversal for local movie theatres

Two of Fanshawe's favourite movie theatres are switching their viewing line-ups.

A once booming new release movie house, Cineplex Odeon Huron Marketplace, located on the corner of Huron and Highbury streets, has dropped it's price to $4.20 and now shows second-run films.

“This is a great value and gives everyone the opportunity to see big budget movies on the big screen for a small price,” said Pat Marshall, Vice President Communications and Investor Relations, Cineplex Entertainment.

Meanwhile, Rainbow Cinemas in the Galleria downtown, better know for showing second-run and art house films, is moving to a new releases line-up, which means an increase in price to $7.50 for all films, with matinees showing for $4.50 daily.

In the past Fanshawe Student Union, in cooperation with Rainbow Cinemas, has offered all movies for a single dollar on Sunday nights for students and the downtown theatre. Now that Rainbow as gone to new releases, the FSU has continued that relationship by offering first-run films on Tuesday nights for $2.50 for students and $4.50 for guests.

The FSU has also offered First-Run Film in the past with Cineplex Odeon Huron Marketplace, which will now be switching to second-run movies for a Toonie on Sunday nights.

Cineplex Odeon own, leases, or has a joint interest in 132 theatres with 1,309 screens in Canada. The theatre company partnership also operates Galaxy, Famous Players Coliseum, Colossus and SilverCity theatres.

Rainbow is a smaller Canadian company and owns theatres in Brantford, Kitchener, Toronto, Ottawa, Regina, Saskatoon and Sudbury, as well as various other locations throughout the country.

This week the First Run Film at Rainbow Cinema will be Borat, with two choices of show times. Tickets must be purchased in advance at the Biz Booth.
