Fun and Fitness: In memory of Zeke

This year's five on five Basketball Intramural Program saw the likes of an incredibly good-looking team.

Names like Phil Edwards, Adrian Parkes and Al Macintosh prove this statement tenfold. Team “In Memory of Zeke” climbed to an undefeated record until it faced an opponent whose name will remain disclosed. For reasons too embarrassing on behalf of the opponent, the opposition will be referred to as team “Shamed.” Their 6'7 male centre blocking our ringer 5'2 girl from behind on a breakaway proves this statement twenty-fold. Props to Chantale Gagne for playing a solid all around game and inspiring an injured riddled male team. We came up short by one in overtime but you can't knock the hustle.

Phil Edwards vowed that Team IMOZ wouldn't lose to Team Shamed ever again.

We got our chance to prove this bold statement against them in the finals. Both teams had agreed on a best of three final. The first game took place on November 15 and hosted both teams at full force. Both Squads managed to bring in sufficient players to provide substitutions, while IMOZ was nearly injury free this time around.

IMOZ's strategy was simple — “Play tight D and these guys stand no chance.”

We stood true to this game plan as Team Shamed found problems breaking down the barriers. Shawn Dredd provided Tenacious D, which shut down the opposition's number one shooting threat. Despite a sprained ankle, Alimoe, aka the Bad Server, was dropping treys all day. Phil's beaster intensity lit up the spark that ensured IMOZ wouldn't look back Momentum shifted even further in our favor when a cameo substitution was made by non other than Zeke himself!

Just when it seemed that Shamed had a glimmer of hope, all wishes were crushed when Kristen Breen decided to get monstrous. After dummying randoms in the post, the nail in the coffin set in when Breen rejected their 6'7 Centre's futile lay up attempt. How fitting that the Shamed tree got blocked from behind, much as he had done to our little 5'2 girl in the regular season. You know what they say about paybacks. Game one to IMOZ by a twenty-point spread of butter.

Game two of the best of three took place on November 16. Performances were complete and utter atrociousness on behalf of both squads. No one in particular had a stand out game while team chemistry was completely extinct for the thirty minutes of play. Yours truly, Ricky Romance, ran into foul trouble early on which aided Team Shamed in keeping it tight until the last two minutes. Game two / Championship to IMOZ by eight in what will go down as the most suspect basketball game ever.

Intramural Top Honors went as follows. Defensive Magnificence: Shawn Dredd, Ferocious Leader: (Head Coach) Phil Edwards, Sixth Man Award: Kristen Breen, Twelfth Man Award: Rick Melo, Most Improved Player: Zeke Primus, Scoring Title: (Captain) Adrian Parkes, Spirit Award: Shane Tingaling, Most Valuable Player / Most Incredible Looking: Al Macintosh.

It may have been a sloppy road to victory but you know what they say; a win is a win, a kill is a kill, a lay is a lay. After all, what's important is that the memory of Zeke will live strong. Stay tuned next semester when three on three coed team “Borderline Zeke” look to repeat as legends.
